  • Yeah, definitely check JoAnn's out.  They may even have a machine you can use during a class or two to decide if you actually like it.

this! I borrowed my moms machine and just started Googleing for projects I want to make. Someone once told me "If you can drive in a straight line, you can sew." Good luck, and have fun!

  • Yes taking a class is good because they'll teach you the basics and also how to read a pattern.  Once you learn how a machine works and how to read a pattern, you can make anything.  And like other people said, you can find lots of tutorials too.
You may be able to find a machine for cheap on Craigslist.  You'll need one if you seriously want to get into it.  Sewing by hand is for the birds ;)

  • Oh.  I should add, that no all Joanns teach classes.  Only the superstores do.  Look on their website.  Don't just assume the one by you teaches classes. Most of them don't.

Sewing by hand is for detail work.

Construction should def be by machine.

So far my machine has only been used to sew paper streamers.  I should get on that.

Borrow from a friend, family, neighbor! Also, check Craigslist. Some quilting shops take trade ins, so they may have some used stock.
I have ran over my finger, it hurt like a mofo, but that hasn't happened again!

  • I think a class is a great place to start. I learned th basics in home ec in high school, then kinda went from there. I will say I hate sewing from patterns and I find Internet tutorials much easier to follow!
