Food Allergy

Anyone have this going on with their LO/ milk allergy?

We discovered at about 2 months old that my LO had a milk allergy. I was BFing at the time and cut out dairy, but was able to eat soy. When I went back to work we introduced the bottle and he took to it so well and was happier so after 6 months we completely switched to Allimentum. Our pedi wanted us at his 9 month appointment to try soy. We did and he cried and had an upset stomach so we decided to wait. We tried again this week and he threw it up this time. The funny thing is we tried Gentlease as well (with a sample from the pedi) and he didn't throw that up, but had a mucusy stool. We've also given him pancakes and tiny pieces of cinnamon rolls (without the frosting) and he's handled that fine without any mucus in his stool. So I'm confused. His he starting to outgrow this allergy or is it too soon to tell? We are not going to try anything else until we have his one year appointment, but I just wanted to see if anyone else was in this situation.

Re: Anyone have this going on with their LO/ milk allergy?

  • We discovered at 2 months LO had a dairy allergy. We asked our gastro at a 7 month appointment when we were going to do a dairy challenge. ( I'd seen comments where others had done it at 6 months.). Doc told us to wait until 1 yr. (bummer). We are going on a trip next month (LO will be 9 months) and I might not be able to be totally dairy free. So we decided to do a challenge on our own. Since we did it, I'm not sure how its going. She's not acting like she has a tummy ache, but she is restless, doesn't want to eat, is fussy, etc.. So I'm not sure if it was bad timing and she's teething? She was fussy several days before we tried this... I don't know if I should go back to dairy free or try to continue the challenge.

  • DD1 is allergic to dairy, soy, and eggs. But she can eat those foods if they're baked in (bread, crackers, granola bars...). But if she touches cheese, milk, yogurt, eggs, she gets a few hives where she touched it.

Some people can handle their allergens if they're baked in, but they can't handle their allergen straight. That may be the case with your LO.

There's also a difference between an intolerance and an allergy. DD2 was MSPI as a baby, but can now tolerate dairy and soy if they're baked into foods. I haven't been brave enough to give her straight cheese, yogurt, or milk to see if she can handle those yet.
