Shaking baby?

I have noticed that a few times I feel like LO is shaking/shivering?  It only lasts a second or so, and is usually when I am sitting or laying still so I don't think I have startled him.  Has anyone else felt this?  I plan on asking at my appt on Thursday but thought maybe someone else had already asked and may have an answer.

Re: Shaking baby?

  • I am pretty sure it has something to do with their developing reflexes. Both of my kids did it but only for a month or two.

  • I've felt it before. I assumed it's normal, but never thought to ask my doctor.

    We're one and done!
  • Haven't felt it with this one but did with the last. Freaked me out. All I could thing was that there was some neurological problem going on. Silly me. He was just fine :)
  • I have this same thing, I think as Jocelyn said that it has to do with their nerves/reflexes. I asked my OB just out of curiosity and that's what they said.

Another odd thing is that I can sometimes hear a "popping" noise like when my joints crack which is actually coming from the baby. OB said it is believed to be the baby's cartilage making noises when moving, however, there is no way to know for sure. I never knew either of these things were common, pregnancy is weird. lol

  • My LO definitely does the shaking thing on occasion. It isn't often but it feels strange.
  • I felt it too, then freaked myself out with Dr. Google that it was seizures. He has only done it a few times. Then when I read in a baby magazine that your baby is crying in the womb, and we don't hear it because their vocal cords haven't developed yet, I attributed it to this. I would have been a nonbeliever if not for my U/S pictures... You can tell he already has fully developed his personality! I went in around 28wks and got a grumpy face photo, then at my 33wk U/S he is clearly smiling!

    Maybe your LO is crying?

  • They also do the startle reflex already. Or maybe a big stretch with a yawn? I know that my legs and arms sometimes shake when I have a big stretch.

  • I feel it all the time, but just figured it's normal- he's a pretty spazzy baby most of the time anyway.
  • I equated this feeling to the feeling of a dog scratching himself up against me! Lol! DS does it often! :-)
  • I feel it all the time too - it's like a little earthquake in my tummy. I just assumed it was normal. Or just shaking it out? It must be cramped in there :)
  • I've felt something similar to that. Like one of them is vibrating for a few seconds.

  • Our oldest son had this weird foot twitching in the womb and for almost a year afterwards. We even took him to a specialist. It was just a nerve thing and once he started walking, it stopped.

  • I've felt it too, so weird! I didn't think much of it but it is so strange.

  • I've felt it too! And since I'm not feeling a lot of movement these days I love it! Interesting info about the reflexes though.

  • Isn't it hiccups?

  • I've felt it two or three times, and the first time it freaked me out because it felt like baby was having a seizure. @staceylynn602.. No, totally different feeling.

  • Oh I've had that feeling too, but thought it was hiccups (ftm here)! I've definitely had the same odd feeling that people are describing in this post and it is soooo weird!

I've had the popping thing happen once.  I forgot to ask about it.
And re: the shaking, that's happened, too.  I guessed that it was normal, but haven't asked the mw about it, either.

If it's what i've experienced, it's totally different than hiccups.  Hiccups are like our hiccups, just a little faster.  What OP is describing is like when a cat stretches and it vibrates/shakes for a second or two.

  • I've felt something like that occasionally, but never really worried about it since it lasted for a very short period of time.  I guess I just figured it was some sort of spasm or twitch.

  • I feel it with this pregnancy more than I did with my other 2. I just assumed he was having a dance party in there. In all serious, I never really gave it too much thought. I figured he was trying to move in limited space and get comfortable.
  • I actually just felt this yesterday while laying on the couch! It felt so weird! I've also had a few jerks and twitches that I imagine being just like when they are born when they startle themselves. It all just amazes me!

  • My little one has done this a few times. I think its perfectly normal, just quivering from streaching.

I have also heard the popping/cracking noise from my belly that someone else mentioned, now that is weird.

Exactly. Sounds like several of us have felt it though.  It must be something normal.

  • I have never experienced this but I can see why it would get you a little freaked out.
