Preemies

Enfacare

Anyone feed this formula to their LO? This was her discharge formula from the NICU. Just wondering how long you were told to stay on it. I am getting conflicting advice from our pedi and the neo she sees at the developmental follow up clinic.

Re: Enfacare

  • My DD is on it. She'll be 3 months on Saturday (one month adjusted). At her 2 month checkup I asked her pedi if we could switch and she said not yet because DD hasn't caught up yet so she still wants her on the higher calorie, especially since we don't use it exclusively - she gets about half her milk from me. I do want to switch though to something that might make her less gassy.

  • It's her formula, too but NICU didn't say how long to keep her on it.  Ped monitoring her weight, she hadn't gained on last specialist visit for first time.  She had been steady gaining but think its because of her nighttime crying in spite of being fed, burped, changed, held, etc.  Ped said she could go 4 to 5 hours on overnight feedings instead of every 3.  Plan on asking at 2nd checkup for future reference.
  • Thanks ladies. Pedi recommended stopping at one month adjusted. LO is gaining wait, fine. After I discussed the neos recommendations with her, she agreed to go to 3 months adjusted, but from google I am seeing preemies on this anywhere from 9 to 12 months, so I wanted to see what others were doing.

  • DS was on it until he was 6 months actual. The pedi wanted him on it longer, since he is a very slow gainer, but I wanted to try something different because be was so constipated and had terrible reflux. Needless to say, we are still struggling to figure out what formula works best for him!

I would listen to the advice of the Neo at this point. We never had any follow ups with one, which I would've liked. GL!

  • My pedi is going to keep DS on it until 6 months actual, and then reassess at his 6 month checkup (Sept 16).  Then we may stay on Enfacare, and add rice cereal.  I'm thinking we'll stay on it until at least 1 year actual.  DS needs the extra calories desperately!

  • General guidelines our nutritionist at a children's hospital uses is preemie formula until 9 months adjusted, then full term formula until 12 months adjusted, then possibly toddler formula/whole milk depending on where LO is at. She says preemie formula has more calcium than term formula which is why they recommend staying on it longer if LO tolerates it well.

  • We used it until about her due date. She had been gaining weight well, so our pedi advised us that we could stop.
