All those little things - what do I need?

As DH and I are trying to take inventory of the things we still need to get, I'm wondering about all the little things.  Can someone chime in and give me a good list of things like:

- medications
- nasal aspirator
- infant nail clippers
- thermometer

that are "must haves" to have on hand for an infant?

I'm a little lost as to what I should have on hand from the get go and what are things that really can just wait.

I'm just a little lost as to these

  • My friend who is a 2x mom gave us a basket full of necessities!  It was such a huge help.  I know that she had infant tylenol and advil in there, gripe water for colic, and a bunch of little remedies brand items- including saline solution.

  • You don't need the nasal aspiratior they will give you one at the hospital. You will want some stuff like Aquaphor and Balmex for rashes.

  • Buy now: baby tylenol (because thats what doc will tell you to give baby the first time he has a fever or teething pain) Saline nasal spray (because that, combined with nasal aspiration, is best way to treat stuffy nose) Humidifier (cool mist is considered safer for nurseries) The rest of the medicine cabinet type stuff can wait (baby ibuprofen, benadryl, etc. aren't recommended under 6 months or so), or you already have it (use your regular old thermometer to take armpit temperature cause you'll be too chicken to attempt rectal reading anyways), or you'll get it at the hospital (nasal aspirator- If you don't like that one, you can upgrade to the nosefrida snotsucker), or you don't really need it (nail clippers, cause you'll accidentally clip his skin and make him bled sweet little baby blood and then vow to never clip again and learn to file or bite them instead!)
  • Medications - we had infant Tylenol on hand.  When DS was around 6 wks, we started giving him gas drops and gripe water, as he was really gassy and miserable.

Nasal aspirator - got 2 free ones from the hospital. I know everyone says it's a must-have, yet DS is now 9 months old and we have yet to need it at all.

Nail clippers - did not clip DS nails for the first 3 months, I filed them down using Emory board ( freebies from the hospital). Love the piyo piyo brand of clippers.

Thermometer- we had the Vicks rectal one, which was okay.

I think the Nose Frida is far better than any aspirator that you'll get anywhere. Gross, but very effective.

This is my go to shower gift. The recipient is always gracious, if not a little unenthusiastic, until the first time their baby gets sick and they have all the necessities on hand. Then I get a phone call or email profusely thanking me. :)

I always include gripe water, gas drops, Tylenol, Advil, saline, Boogie Wipes, Vicks Baby Rub, teething tablets, and rash cream.

We used an ear thermometer and it worked fine for us. The bulb syringe from the hospital worked best.

  • I wanted to comment on the snot sucker... While the hospital ones might work, not all hospitals will give you one to take home (or have one handy to steal). I found that this one worked great for my DD: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003LVYHKE/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 She was 6lbs at birth and her nostrils were tiny. This snot sucker has a very small hole so I was actually able to get it in her nose. The tip is also removable so you can clean the inside.
  • These are two things that are of a different nature that I received as gifts and really like and have used quite a bit- steam sterilizer bags and nursing pads (if you are nursing).

The steam bags are Medela and each gets 20 uses so the box of them will last a while. You can also boil bottles, pumps, etc., but I love just popping the bag in the microwave for two minutes and being done.

For breast pads I recommend Lansinoh because of the double stick. I bought washable pads but was leaking through them at the beginning even when I doubled up so I preferred the disposable Lansinoh.
