Audelia

Dh loves loves loves Delia, but I only like it for a nn, it doesn't have a great meaning and I just can't 100% get in board as a fn. well I adore Cordelia and he just can't get on board with that. I stumbled on Audelia today which means "noble strength".

And nn could obviously be Delia. Mn would be lee after big brother.

Thoughts? I think I like it! But I haven't ever heard it before.
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! Re: Audelia

  • Sorry, but it looks like Aurelia spelled wrong to me.

  • I've never heard or seen Audelia before. Where does it originate from?
  • I think I like it. I've never heard it before either. At first glance, I wasn't sure how to pronounce it. Sounds like it could be a good compromise for you two!

Apparently it's an old English variant of Audrey

  • I want to like it, but I'm having some trouble with it. Like, I read it three different ways when I looked at it:

    ow-deh-LEE-uh

    oh-deh-LEE-uh

And then I went, "Oh! It's supposed to be oh-DEEL-yah."

It's okay, but really kind of clunky. What's the thing with Delia not being used as a full name? It's totally a full name. It's got two to three syllables (depending on how hard you emphasize the I). That barely constitutes a NN.

  • I'm not crazy about Audelia. Can't put my finger on why - maybe something about the sound of it.   Question for you, though - if DH loves Delia and you're willing to use it as her nn (and presumably "everyday" name?), why is it you won't go for it as her FN?   When you say it doesn't have a great meaning, do you mean it has a bad meaning or one that is just not as special (for lack of a better word) enough? Not judging, just wondering.

It just seems to me that if you're struggling to find a way to make Delia fit maybe it's time to go back to the drawing board completely, or just give in to Delia since you're willing to call her that anyway.

  • Are you thinking of the meaning of Delilah?? I know that doesn't have the best meaning.

And just to clarify- why can't you name her Cordelia with the nn Delia?

Nothing wrong with the name, I just don't love it enough to use it alone...

  • I love Cordelia.  LOVE.

I recently came across the name Adelia and I like it because I love the name Adele.  https://www.babynamewizard.com/baby-name/girl/adelia

I don't know why but I'm not a fan of Audelia.  Weird, I know, considering it's so close to Adelia.

  • I love Cordelia. I think Audelia sounds too much like audacious or audio to me.

It's NMS but I wouldn't side-eye it if I heard it on a child. It doesn't sound crazy or made-up or anything.

I'm not sure I'm pronouncing it correctly though. I want to say aw-delia. Is that right?

ETA: I do like Audelia better than Cordelia. I think Audelia is prettier. Plus, I know of two Cordelias (one of whom is a TV show character so take that as you will) and both of them go by the nickname Cordy, not Delia.

  • I'm not a huge fan of Audelia - just don't like the "aw" sound.  What about Adelia though, like pp mentioned?

  • I'd use Delia on its own. Or, if you and your H can't come to an agreement, have you considered Dahlia as an alternative?

    LOVE Cordelia though

  • NMS but if I met one I would still think its a pretty name
  • I have an aunt named Adelia and I think it's gorgeous. Audelia looks like a smoosh of that and Audrey to me.

    LOVE Cordelia.
