Suddenly on the boob ALL NIGHT (6 mo old)

We cosleep/bedshare.  For the past few months DD (6.5 months) has slept for the first part of the night in her cosleeper, and once she woke up for a snack, she stayed in bed with me, generally nursing one to three times/per night.  I was totally okay with this and got sufficient sleep to function.

Last Friday DD slept a LONG time, deeply (around 6:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.), and ever since then she has slept horribly and if she's not latched to my boob in bed with me, she's crying.    I do know that at daycare they say she is developing stranger danger, and she is more attached to me than DH lately.  Separation anxiety?  Growth spurt?  Any experience/thoughts?  (A very helpful person in my birth month group (sarcasm) says I trained her to do this because I bedshare, but since she's been sleeping pretty well up to now with only normal wakings to nurse, I don't think it's that I suddenly trained her to latch for the whole night.)

Re: Suddenly on the boob ALL NIGHT (6 mo old)

  • At 6 months, it could be all of the above!

It's common for them to nurse very frequently when they're growing or hitting developmental milestones (or about to), and it's also possible that since she's becoming older and more aware, she notices your absence more during the day and needs the extra snuggle time to reconnect during the night. There is so much going on at this age!

Luckily phases like this don't seem to last too long, so I would expect her to sleep better within a few weeks. :) When DS went through phases like this, I just slept all night with him latched...but I know that not everyone can do that! :P Good luck!

  • My LO is 6.5 months and doing the same...waking up multiple times a night and wanting to sleep all night on the boob. We also bedshare. I have no idea what the cause is but she is also much more clingy to me in general. I can no longer take a shower without her screaming. It's like having a newborn again! Sorry I was no help but I definitely understand!

  • Thank you all. Amazing how just knowing someone has a similar experience can help. I can hack a few weeks, she is growing leaps and bounds developmentally right now! And she is sleeping off boob as I type.

  • I would guess that it may be a little separation anxiety, but also probably teething. My son always wanted to nurse all night when he was getting a new tooth. I also noticed when he was learning a new skill like sitting up or crawling he did not sleep well and wanted to nurse pretty much all night. I'm sure it's a phase and it will pass eventually.

My daughter has been attached to the boob for a few weeks now. She's 5 months. I work outside of the home, so I cherish this time. Pretty much the only time she will sleep is when she's right next to me. I'm totally ok with that!

  • 6m is a time of emotional and mental development.
And babies need more comfort and snuggles and nursing during these growth spurts as well as physical growth spurts.
Give her what she needs and she will be doing better soon.
