Pregnant with twins and high risk

Hello. As of last Tuesday my husband and I found out we were having twins. Twins run in both of our families but I am still in shock. Of course I am thrilled but this is my first pregnancy so I am extremely scared. After the ultrasound, they told me baby b is a week smaller than baby a and that baby b is wrapped in some sort if sac. The doc told me its likely to miscarry baby b. However, I haven't experienced any miscarriage systems. Has anyone experienced this? Also, I am naturally on the thin side weighing in pre pregnancy at about 115 now I am 119. Should I be gaining weight weekly? Any advice, help or anything regarding having twins would be great. I am also a middle school teacher and in freaked out about working while carrying twins...thanks!

Re: Pregnant with twins and high risk

  • Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'm sorry about your complications with baby B. I don't have any advice for you but I'll certainly keep you in my thoughts!

I'm also a teacher (elementary school) and weigh about the same as you. My MFM was insistent that I eat tons of protein to gain weight. I can't recall the exact number...I want to say 160 grams? I made protein smoothies and ate Luna bars or Cliff bars just about every day. I had lots of eggs, meat, peanut butter, etc. It was a struggle to eat that much! I also had to drink at least a gallon of water a day, which is really tough for a teacher to do because of the lack of bathroom breaks. I ended up gaining 40 pounds and made it to 35 weeks 1 day.

If you haven't already started school, make sure someone can help you set up your classroom. I ended up on partial bed rest at 20 weeks because I have a history of a weak cervix. I couldn't really take care of myself while in the classroom because I was always on my feet, never drank enough water, and didn't have time to snack as much as I needed to. In middle school hopefully the kids are more independent, but in elementary school they are SO needy. Thankfully my leave was all paid, I just ended up using most of the sick days I had acquired over 10 years of teaching.

There were 2 other women in my school who were pregnant with twins and they also ended up on bed rest. One teacher had her twins at 28 weeks and the other at 34 weeks. It's so hard to take it easy as a teacher so just do the best you can and don't be afraid to ask for help!

  • How far along are you? At my 6.3 week ultrasound we found that baby a looked perfect with a heartbeat while b was pretty no existent with no heartbeat and was told to prepare for a potential miscarriage of b. The following week I went back as I was having a lot of blood and assumed b was gone but behold baby b caught up and had a strong heartbeat. I am 9 weeks now and b is a constant 3 days behind but everything looks great. I wanted to relay my story to give you hope that twins can be at different points and one can lag. I hope this is the case for you and wish you all the best!!!
  • Congratulations and wishing you all the best, especially for your Baby B.  As far as weight gain - just talk to your doctor about your concerns and they will let you know what you should be doing for your specific situation.  All of us have very specific cases that lead to very different guidance. My entire first trimester I lost 4 pounds - my doctors ended up wanting me to gain quite a bit (60 lbs by 32 weeks for a high risk set of triplets on a 5 foot frame - with morning sickness till 18 weeks) and I've so far managed to put on 40 in the 2nd tri with lots of protein and fat - whatever they advise you to do - you'll manage I promise!  Good Luck!
  • Thank you everyone! Baby B had a string heartbeat so we are very helpful. I have not had much of an appetite but when I do it's for red meat, I hope that is okay. I also have no desire for water but I've been forcing myself to drink it. Are there any snacks you all recommend? I have my next ultrasound in 1.5 weeks to check on baby b..
  • Yay for Baby B!!

I ate a large serving of greek yogurt w fresh fruit every morning. I snacked on raw almonds and granola bars. Lots of protein.

  • I was recommended by my OB, midwife, naturopath and chiro to eat 80-120 grams of protein minimum. I would strongly recommend the brewer pregnancy diet. I also heard vitamin c helps with the strength of your amniotic sac. Red meat is great (do grass-fed if possible). I ate pastured eggs everyday. Lots of dairy, just because it was an easy source of protein, lots of veggies and water. Unfortunately I would plan, (but not expect..?) to go on bed rest towards the end of pregnancy. I went on SBR at 22 weeks, one week after we found out it was twins. And remained on my left side for the next 14 and a half weeks. Only getting up to go to the bathroom and shower. I even ate on my left side. But they're here safe and sound!!

Congrats and best wishes for all 4 of you!
