Riding in backseat with baby

It's been over a month since I posted something and have probably only stopped in a few times since then.  I have some catching up to do on all the interesting topics that have come up.

This question is for the STMs.  How long did you or SO ride in the backseat with the baby?  Friends of ours have a 2 year old and when they are both in the car one of them always rides in the back.  They told us it's for safety reasons.  Both H and I agreed it seemed like a bit much.  

Thoughts?

    We rode in the back on the way home from the hospital and when DS was really fussy that's it. What do they do when only one of them is in the car? What safety issue are they worried about? This definitely seems excessive.

    Only on long trips when baby is fussy. We didn't on the way home from the hospital because we are five minutes away and she was sleeping.

    Ummm... we usually don't do it unless DD is too upset or something and we are in a hurry and have to leave right then.

    Maybe for the first couple weeks but we really didn't go anywhere other than the pedi's office.  Like pp, I would sit back there if she was upset or needed a bottle on a longer trip.

    Ds is 14 months and if we take any long road trips (more than an hour) one of us will sit in the back with him.

    Lol excessive is their style.  The user's guide for the car seat recommends an adult rides in the backseat when there are 2 adults in the car.  That's where they came up with that idea.  I read that in the guide for our car seat as well but immediately brushed it off.

    Yeah, that's definitely a bit much. I think we stopped that after the first month or so. I don't understand what safety issues they are thinking about...

    Now, if we are on a longer trip (like, we'll be in the car for multiple hours), one of us will sometimes sit back there with DD (now 2 1/2) to keep her entertained... but otherwise, no.

    I didn't even ride in the backseat when we brought DD home from the hospital. I have a SIL who always sits in the back with her son. I don't understand it.

    I only rode in the back with DS on the way home from the hospital and very occasionally when we are on a very long car ride and he starts to get bored and cranky. Otherwise, nope.

    I rode in the backseat on the way home from the hospital the day DS was born....never done it since. Didnt even ride in the back when we brought DD home...her brother was back there with her and there was no room for mommy.

    It depends on how long of a trip it is. If it's over an hour, I sit in the back. DS is 18 months old but still RF and he has always been fussy in the car. When he was really little, I almost always sat in the back with him because he'd cry to the point of vomiting.

    Only on the way home from the hospital. Other than that, he was on his own unless we had other people in the car!

    Just the way home and maybe a few times after that. I would worry, especially after 2 years, that the baby would get to used always having you there. They need to self soothe a little bit too.

    On the way home from the hospital and then on long car trips when he was rear facing.  Now that he is forward facing we don't even sit back there on long car trips.

    Yeah, unless there's a specific reason someone needs to be next to the baby, she can ride in the back by herself. When our first was about 6 months old we drove from Baltimore to Iowa, and I rode in the back part of the time to keep her interested and fed. That's about it.

    He was a very fussy baby, but not anymore. She tries her very best to avoid driving anywhere without another adult because she insists on sitting in the back with him.

    My Dh usually does when we are on a long ride, such as when we drove to visit family and it is a 10 hour trip.  I would say anything +2 hours someone sits back there, but that is mainly for entertainment purposes since he is still rear facing.

    I don't even remember... I think 4 months or so I'd sit in the back with her if DH was driving.  It was longer than DH wanted me to- he missed me up front.  I probably won't do that with this next baby, because there won't be a ton of room back there with 2 in the back of our sedan. 

    It was more for ease of calming her/ giving her a bottle on road trips/ singing or reading to her, than for safety though.

    Never. Not even on the way home from the hospital. 
    Actually, I did once. We were on a long road trip and we only had 30 more minutes to go when dd starting getting super upset. I sat back there with her to entertain her for the last little bit.

    I probably did it till DS was around 6 months.  He was EBF until that time, and when he was hungry he'd SCREAM.  So I'd always have to be back there in case he got hungry and needed a bottle right away.  I also hung out in the back in the beginning because I'd often bring my pump with me and would need to pump at some point depending on how long we'd be gone.

    Seems odd to me. We only had one of us sit in the back with DD when she was tiny (and fussy) for entertainment purposes, to retrieve dropped toys or pacifiers, etc. What would an adult in the back do if there was an accident? Just be closer to the baby?

    I would start doing that never, except that DH is paranoid. Therefore I will say that I stop doing this as soon as DH stops asking me "is the baby breathing?" every five seconds.

    I've heard that the mirrors aren't safe. That in an accident they could become a projectile. Anyone else heard that?

    Only on the way home from the hospital and with this LO we won't be able to since DD1 will be in the back seat too.

    Only did on the way home from the hospital with both and I won't do it this time because DD & DS will be back there. 2 years is a bit much.

    Oooo good question! I was hoping that lots of other people would say no so that I wouldn't feel guilty for not wanting to. I get car sick if I sit in the back, so definitely don't want to be back there!
