Rolling over

Alright, so my LO is only 10 weeks old and does really well at tummy time as far as holding his head up and pushing off his arms and such. However, he seems to show zero desire to roll over. Im not overly concerned because he is still young and I know the window for rolling over is pretty big. I was just wondering how I can encourage rolling over or if I even should try to encourage it opposed to just letting it happen on its own in due time.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Rolling over

  • You're already one step way ahead of me. DD still hates tummy time and barely holds her head up on her tummy let alone push up on her arms and she is 11 weeks.

Same here. My LO is 10 weeks tomorrow. She turns her head side to side while on her tummy, but doesn't hold it up for more than a few seconds. No way she's going to roll over anytime soon. But I'm not worried about it.

  • DS hates tummy time too, but he will at least humor me for a good 5 minutes before getting upset, lol.

  • 12 weeks here. She has excellent head control and is tolerating tummy time in little increments, but has no desire to rollover. I've been helping her to try to encourage it, but to no avail.

  • My LO wasn't that great at tummy time until recently. On July 14th when he was 9 weeks he started rolling from his back to his sides. I was shocked. He then spent a few days constantly rolling to his left side and trying to roll over, but he wasn't really close to doing it. Then he stopped rolling to his side all together for awhile. Meanwhile I was starting to worry about flat head, so I tried to do more tummy time. When I put him on his mat to play, I always start off on his back so he can bat at his toys. Then when he would start to fuss I would roll him over to his tummy for tummy time. Then one day he started trying to roll again from his back to his tummy. He would almost make it, but his arm would get stuck. After a few days of this, he finally rolled from back to tummy for the first time on July 30 at 11 weeks.

I didn't realize this until just now, but maybe starting each session on his back and then rolling him on his tummy helped him to start rolling? I honestly didn't do it on purpose. I would start him on his back because if I just put him on his tummy right away he would get fussier faster and even if I turned him back on his back after he would still fuss and not want to play with his toys. Also once I wanted to put him on his tummy it was just easier to roll him on his tummy than to pick him up and put him down again. Also he only rolls to his left, and I just realized that's the same direction I always would roll him to do tummy time (because I always sit on that side of his mat.)

He didn't start to pick up his head more and support himself on his arms until right around the time he started rolling. But again he rolls from back to front. He's rolled from front to back a few times but not nearly as much. Now every time I put him on his mat he bats his toys for awhile and then rolls over himself.

  • J will be 13 weeks on wed. He is doing better at tummy time but has no interest in rolling over. I do usually roll him a couple of times a day. He does roll onto his side when sleeping...

wow @makeupgeek - your LO is rolling from tummy to back?? That's great! DS can only go from front to back. He's trying really hard to go from back to front but hasn't quite got it yet.
He rolls from back to tummy consistently now. He's only rolled from tummy to back like three times. I think it will be awhile before he does that consistently.

I can't believe how fast our LO's are growing up!

  • 10 weeks here as well, and we are in the same boat! LO doesn't mind Tummy Time, and is pretty good at it as long as it's not too close to nap time, but she has zero interest in rolling. I've rolled her over a few times instead of picking her up, and she has absolutely no reaction to it. :)

DD hates tummy time. She has good head control and she loves rolling over. She does it both ways, I've noticed when she starts getting tired of tummy time she just rolls over and stares at the fan. She is 12 weeks today

DD (11 weeks) will roll from her tummy to her back but not vice versa. Since becoming a bit stronger she's gone from hating tummy time to tolerating it quite well.

We are also only at front to back. And mostly only one direction. He did roll from his left side to right side the other day thought.

OP, don't worry about it. But his PT for torticollis does guide him in rolling sometimes to see how he does. She does it at the hips. You could do that if you wanted.

So to encourage a baby to roll over when on their tummy get a super awesome toy. It has to be amazing to look at. Put it just to the side of their head, when they start watching it bring it over their head slowly so that baby has to look over one shoulder and keep going. Eventually LO will start rolling over to look at the awesome object. hope that made sense. GL my LO sucks at tummy time....though she does do it in frot of the computer.(see photo) imageimageimage

This is us! But we still haven't mastered the roll-to-tummy yet. He's up on his side with perfect ease now but getting all the way to tummy on his own hasn't happened yet.

  • Wow, we must just suck as parents or something because we're at 14 weeks and we can't get S to hold her head up during tummy time for more than a second or two and there's no way she's even close to considering rolling over. I know they all do things at their own rate, but reading all these awesome rolling over stories make me just a teeny tiny bit jealous!

DH loves to build a "pillow ramp" and let LO roll down. Lo thinks its hilarious and cackles the while time. That's how LO "practices".
