Babies: 6 - 9 Months

This has to be more than teething, right? (longish)

Thursday I could see LO's gums were swollen, and I thought "oh boy, here we go again!" He was in good spirits though, so I was hoping he'd breeze through these two. Not so much.

He woke up Saturday and barely ate. I thought he was warm and took his temp - 100, so not much to worry about. Then he completely refused his next 2 bottles. I called our doctor and he said they usually just tell people to watch their child closely for 48 hours when they have a fever, and to make sure he was wetting diapers every 4-6 hours at least.

LO slept pretty well, waking once to eat a few ounces. When he woke up, I took his temp - 102.7. He was completely lethargic all day - would barely play, and just wanted to be held. He whimpered constantly, and it was almost a relief when he would cry. I got him to eat by putting formula in a medicine syringe and squeezing it into his mouth. He had maybe, 10oz all day. He did eat some solids - I tried to give him really watery fruit purees and mixed formula with that too. He's staying pretty hydrated - just hope he gets some rest tonight.

I'm thinking this has to be more than just teething. But I noticed tonight that his left center incisor has definitely cut through, and the right side is not far behind. Has anyone else's LO had such a go of it with teething? Or could this just be a terrible coincidence of sickness + teething? Either way, if he's not better tomorrow, I'm taking him in.
Just curious what others have experienced - thanks for reading and sharing!

  • Sounds like teething, although the lethargy could be sickness.  DS did not eat well when he was teething because it hurts his gums too much.

  • I thought about a month ago dd was teething and it turned out it wasn't. She had an ear infection but acted the same way your LO is acting. Hope it's just teething!

  • My LO had a fever for 4 days running between 100 and 103. My ped said with teething the fever shouldnt be over 101. I took her tomthe doctor and shr had an ear infection. We have been on a antibiotic for a week now and she is a completely happy baby again.
  • Could be both. Teething can often go hand in hand with ear and sinus trouble.
  • With a fever that high and the lethargy I would go in and have LO checked. DD takes teething hard, but that seems like more.

  • He might be dealing with teething also, but that fever is too high to be solely teething. I'd definitely go see the doc.

  • I agree, that temp is too high and you should def have him checked.
  • OP, what did you end up finding out?
  • He was doing better yesterday and today, but still had a temp this morning, so I made an appointment. Just got back from the doctor - it's hand foot and mouth disease. Ugh!

Thanks for the advice ladies. I just knew it had to be more than teething. Can't really do anything except let it run its course, keep him hydrated, and give him tylenol. But I'm glad we know what it is.

So sad! I hope that he feels better soon.
