SO Costumes - poll for fun

Store bought or homemade?

I never, not once had a store bought costume as a kid and always wanted one. I buy them for my kids. I'm also no good at that sort of crafty/idea thing anyway. Shopping for costumes with the kids is so fun.

Re: SO Costumes - poll for fun

  •  We switched back and forth as kids, depending on what we wanted to be and whether or not it would be better homemade or store bought. I'll do the same with DD.

  • I never had a storebought costume either, my mom always sewed such amazing ones, we never needed to. I'd love to be able to do the same, but we'll see. If my kid ends up preferring storebought ones, it'll be NBD to me.

  • Last year I made the older girls Shark Girl and Lava Girl costumes. DD3 was a store bought, hand me down pink poodle.

it all depends on what we want. ND can be cold in October, so we make warm costumes that layers can go under. I hated store bought plastic costumes as a kid.

the year before I made family costumes & we went as Fred, Wilma & DD2 as Pebbles & DD1 as Betty Rubble & DD3 as Bam-Bam (she was 1).
  • Growing up our costumes were always homemade by either my mom or busia. When we were young we were usually all characters from the same movie. One year it was Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, etc. I was the princess and my brothers were the prince or something. I love those memories.

For DS' first Halloween I knew right away that I wanted him to be a little lion and my mom made that costume. Last year I didn't decide until the very last minute and ended up buying him one from the store. I really want to make his costumes every year but will buy them if that is what he wants.

  • Store bought. I can't sew to save my life.

  • As a kid, they were either store bought or homemade. Since I suck at being crafty, DD will most likely be wearing store bought costumes.

  • My mom always made our costumes. She was very talented and they were always amazing costumes.

We always buy our kids costumes because I can't sew.  I think if I made their costumes it would look like the kids made their own costumes.

I think store bought costumes have come a long way.  Way back when I was a kid, the store bought costumes were those plastic things with the plastic masks.

  • My mom always made ours.  I loved that our costumes were always unique and exactly what we wanted.

I have made the kids' costumes every year but last because we were so busy with moving.  I love making the kids' costumes so buying them takes a lot of the fun of Halloween from me.

My mom always made ours and they were awesome. I have zero sewing skills and zero desire to learn so DS gets store bought. But I don't buy him cheap, crappy costumes.

My mom made ours too, but she always came up with the idea and she kinda sucked at assembly. It was usually something made from a tunic shaped garment with puff paint...so sad looking. One year she gave me a clear plastic bag and a bunch of balloons to blow up. I was a bag of jelly beans. Yea, that one was fun at school. :/

  • I'll probably end up making them because I like weird things that they don't sell in stores. But I'm not opposed to the store bought ones, either.

As a kid, I had one handmade costume. It was a princess one that my grandmother sewed for me. I loved it. Kind of wish I had more.
  • Best homemade costume my mom ever made: two-headed monster, for my best friend and I to wear together. It was a huge costume with puffy arms sticking out all over, and we walked around all night attached to each other, laughing hysterically. Second best: two-headed chicken, the following year. Not quite as original, but we still got to walk around attached together all night.

  • Growing up we had both, store bought for the tipical stuff (ballerina, characters, wonder woman) and homemade for more creative ones (hawaiian, geisha, venezuelan indian, genie...) My dad was the one that actually made our costumes those times; he was super creative and handy, the details in those costumes were amazing!

So far I've made DS's first carnival and first Halloween costumes (prawn nigiri and spider) and bought the other 3 (mouse, devil, Woody)

  • Both years my DS' costume was something I pieced together buying different things, because I couldn't find exactly what I was picturing at the store (well, last year he was Oliver Twist, and they don't really sell that).  So, somewhere in between store bought and homemade.

I really can't sew for anything, so as nice as I think it'd be, my kids will probably never have truly homemade costumes.

  • My mom mad all of ours when we were young. They are still beautiful. I was an idian ine year and she made me a skirt with a top and then all this beading to wear over it. Neckless, braclets and a head piece to match. It still looks perfect. She made a dino, and a mouse that she still has. And a adorable witch. She still has all the ones she made for us and they look like store bought.
I buy ds, my projects come out a lot better in my head lol.
  • Homemade, when I was growing up and now. I'm hoping they will work on their own costumes when they're older, I have really fond memories of making my own costumes as a kid.

  • My mom always made ours. I'm just not that industrious so I buy ours. I've priced out making them versus buying and have found that by the time you buy all the supplies you aren't saving much by making them and if you find a sale it can be cheaper to buy them.

  • Depends. I do a bit of both.
For example, Maeve wanted to be Rapunzel last year. I purchased her dress, but made her Rapunzel hair. Mo was Jessie from Toy Story. I made her costume out of a white button down shirt, jeans, fabric, & felt.

  • We had both growing up. But, I always loved that my mom made things for us for holidays and birthdays etc. I made DDs costume last year (an octopus!). And plan to make hers this year too.. Not sure what yet..
