Do your kids eat salad?

I was reading through everyone's meal plans for the week and seeing all the salads made me wonder, do your kids eat the salad, too?

I rarely make salad because DH would never eat one (he is pickier than the pickiest toddler you could ever imagine and won't touch vegetables of any kind).   One week I made a mini salad for DS when I made one for myself, he tasted it but wouldn't eat it.

I didn't touch salad until I was in HS but hope my kids will eat it when they're a bit older.

  • My DD will eat salad, but DS will only eat carrots or broccoli.

  • Julia won't but Emma will. I'm not a huge fan of salad myself but I eat it a lot because it's quick, easy and healthy.

  • DS1 will say he doesn't like salad, but he means lettuce. He won't eat any salad greens. But I can give him a plate of salad and he will eat the toppings off of it.

If I have chef salads or something for dinner, I will usually make DS1 a plate with the salad ingredients all separated out: a little spot of ham, boiled egg, tomatoes, shredded carrots, shredded cheese, etc.

  • Mine does!  She'll eat a big salad, with cukes and carrots.  She loves a spinach salad, too.  And she likes italian dressing :)

But, she only started when she was 5 or so.. before that, she wouldn't eat it, or even try it.  We went to Ruby Tuesday once and she picked off my salad plate, and has eaten it since.

  • DH is the only one that eats salads and DS only like avocados, he spits everything else out. I don't eat any veggies but corn.
DH used to say "I do eat veggies, I eat corn!"  Then we found out corn isn't a veggie, it's a grain.  It was all he had going for him, and just like that, he had nothin' lol.

  • DS2 loves all salads. DS1 acts like you are torturing him if you even suggest that he tries lettuce. He'll eat some of the individual ingredients as long as they are seperated from each other though.
  • he'll eat lettuce dipped in ginger dressing sometimes (think japanese steakhouse.) and he'll eat a lot of veggies dipped in hummus (or ketchup, gross.) but he's never eaten a bowl of salad the way i would.
  • I should add that my kids eat all other raw veggies, it's just lettuce that Julia won't eat. Emma will only eat salad with vinegarette on it (red wine or balsamic) and neither will touch anything that any other dressing has touched. But plain raw veggies are a hit in my house.

  • DD will, but DS won't.  It's one of the few things he won't eat.  DD is usually my picky eater.

Dd will eat taco salad like nobodies business. Regular sald greens though not really. I give a small salad every time we have one, but hers is heavy on tomatoes, peas and whatever else. I will continue putting the greens on her plate every time though. One say, she might surprise me and eat it :)

ETA: DD will eat coleslaw, roasted kale, steamed spinach, just not in salad form :)
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • No neither of my kids like lettuce or any type of dressing. They do like the shredded cheese, olives, and croutons...you know the least healthy stuff on a salad. H is not a fan of salad either so we rarely have it at home

  • DD loves it for the most part, as long as it's well dressed. We had coleslaw tonight with our sloppy joes, and it was her favourite part of the meal. She'll eat green salads and caesar salads as well.... Knock on wood ;)

DS1 really likes lettuce, including things like arugula. DS2 is not a fan, though he'll try it once in awhile. DS1 also really loves fresh herbs, he eats them out of the garden. I usually give them deconstructed salads, like someone else said.

Not being mean, but what do you eat then? Will you eat cooked veggies if they're in things? (Full disclosure: I do really love vegetables, but it's only been since I really learned how to cook them.)

  • My three year old loves salad, but the other two just pick at it. I usually only serve it as a side for the kids.

Surprisingly, he's been loving salad since he was about 2. We saw them feeding the black bear lettuce at the zoo and ever since he's loved it. People are always surprised. He doesn't always like all of the stuff i put in it, but he'll eat most of it. I LOVE salad so we eat it a lot.

  • Depends. She's eat iceberg lettuce and she's eat a baby spinach and arugula salad. We usually don't eat entree size salads, but I serve spinach and arugula salads a lot.
  • He only eats the lettuce.

  • All of mine that can eat it and love it. 10, 7 & 3. The baby not yet.
  • My 2 yr old doesn't.  He does feel the need to comment about the "leaves" on his plate though.

At school (when teaching) pretty much every kid goes nuts for salad when it's offered.  They always have the bar, but sometimes they serve huge actual salads with spinach.  You'd think it was ice cream.  It's not something they ever see at home and is a huge treat.

  • My kids love the shit out of salad.  Lettuce of any kind, spring mix, spinach - whatever.  They typically want sunflower seeds, cheese and ranch on it.

Yes, my kids LOVE salad, especially Caesar salads.  My kids are 1 and 3.

  • DS usually won't, but DD sort of does. It's a deconstructed salad...I'll put a little lettuce, diced tomatoes, cucumbers, black olives, or croutons around the outside of her plate with ranch in the middle.

  • We eat salad a lot for dinner, ds, who is 2, loves it
  • DS eats salad.  Better than MH  :-w
  • DS loves salads. One night, about 6 months ago, I was having a big salad for dinner and he at half of it. Surprised the heck out of me. This weekend at my cousins wedding they served a spinach, fruit and goat cheese salad with the entrees and DS shared one with my mom. I love that he isn't picky, yet. lol.

  • I'm the worst for this - I really don't like salads in general. I love cooked veggies, but salads don't excite me unless they have tons of delicious stuff on them like bacon, goat cheese, candied pecans, etc. (which I never bother with at home, and I know they kind of detract from the healthy component anyway). I always make a salad and force myself to eat some, though, and I know I need to keep it up to set a good example for DS.

  • i don't eat lettuce so I never eat a traditional salad. But I do like spinach.  I don't think little man has had raw veggies yet. maybe when he gets another back tooth we will try

  • He likes a lot of veggies but only eats actual salad (with lettuce and lots of green leaves) from time to time, he calls it "daddy's leafs" and when he's in the mood he eats a lot of it, but it doesn't happen often
I, on the other hand, despise salad
