CD Mamas: Nightime Suggestions

So DD has been in cloth since she was 8 weeks old and I've not had any problems overnight until recently. She's always worn either a Bum Genius Freetime (which is an AIO with two inserts that kind of fold in) or a 4.0 with a regular liner plus a Joey Kicks hemp doubler.

However, recently she's been belly sleeping plus rolling around like crazy in her sleep and we've been having pee leaks. Part of the problem may be the fit because she has huge thighs and it's hard to get the diaper just right on her. I'm wondering if I should go to something more fitted overnight. I also saw someone post about wool covers but I'm not familiar with those.

DH is concerned the Freetimes need stripped. I've never done this and I'm not sure when it's apparent that your diapers need to be stripped. Suggestions from those who have stripped them? Also, what do you use overnight that you've had success with? TIA!

Re: CD Mamas: Nightime Suggestions

  • I am interested in this, too.  DS only has leaks at night even when using double inserts in our Rumparooz or BumGenius. I meant to do some research but we ended up using disposables just for night-time about a month ago, which is fine with us since our main reason for CD is cost and 15cents a night is WELL WORTH the sleep.

  • I use a Kawaii Good night heavy wetter with two of their bamboo inserts and one thirsties hemp doubler and not a leak to be found. As they get older they pee more, you probably just need more absorbency, that said a lot of people say you need to strip at least once every couple months. I haven't yet, but there are articles all over the place on how. Some people boil the inserts with dawn dish soap, some do a wash with bleach and dawn then several rinses. I am not sure why dawn seems to be common, but that is what i have read so far.

  • Our girl still eats a lot overnight and I had to just add two of the smaller size liners from our Charlie bananas on top of the regular one. That has done the trick so far. I did have to unsnap to size large to make it fit.
  • We use BG 4.0 at night and stuff them with 1 MF insert and 2 hemp inserts.  I also had to up-size at night since DS became a belly sleeper.  He was only leaking at the belly line (not from the legs).  We tried sposies for vacation and had to up-size at night as well.  I think sleeping on the belly has something to do with this.

  • I haven't had to strip our diapers [surprisingly, when we moved someone had left a dryer stick thing inside the dryer and I didn't notice it until we'd done a few loads]

We use BG 4.0 with either the regular, NB + a really thin hemp liner, I'm not sure which brand, or a regular + https://www.amazon.com/Thirsties-Hemp-Inserts-Large-18-40/dp/B002FB7FLY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376262102&sr=8-1&keywords=hemp+inserts [Thirsties large hemp] and have had no leakage. DD sleeps on her belly and I would consider her a fairly heavy wetter. I'm always shocked at how heavy her diaper is in the morning!

She eats twice in the MOTN and goes 12 hours between diaper changes.
  • I tried pretty much everything, included fitteds and wool, and DS still leaks at night. He eats every 2 hours or so ON, so I think until he eases up on that a little bit that night cloth just isn't in the cards.

We use size 4 Pampers overnights.

We use sbish OBF fitteds with wool and have never had a leak with our belly sleeper.

I've been wanting to try Bambo disposables for overnight when traveling because I heard they're excellent (and a "natural" diaper).

  • We use Kawaii HD2 with a microfiber and Joeybunz premium hemp insert. That diaper and insert combo works great for us!

  • Thanks for the replies, ladies!  I'll be looking into getting some hemp inserts.

  • A few thoughts...

Fit is super important, obviously.  Are the leaks coming around the legs or out the waist?  I know some people with chubby thighed babies will sometimes set the middle rise snap on the second setting and the side rise snap all the way open to allow room for the thighs, but to keep the diaper to the right size.  You might try this if you think it might help with the fit.

A lot of people recommend wool + fitteds for overnight.  We had a lot of nighttime leaks with DS as he approached 1yr and we tried that combo and he still leaked out.  Maybe we should have tried an overnight-specific fitted or something on the higher quality end, but that also comes with a decent price tag so I ended up trying something else instead.  What worked for us was a BG pocket stuffed with a MF insert + 2 large hemparoos.  It was really bulky, but really absorbent.  At the same time, they'll use the fitteds overnight for a long time so even if they're pretty expensive you can look at it as an investment   Hemp is my recommendation for overnight though.  Trim, absorbent, and naturally antimicrobial.

Wool care is a little different than just regular diapers.  They have to be lanolized, but if it works it's worth it.

As far as stripping goes you would likely know if they needed stripped in addition to absorbency issues they would probably smell.  The only time they might need stripped without an accompanying smell would be if they've been exposed to something that could cause some sort of film on them like PP mentioned about the dryer sheet bar or maybe a diaper cream or something.  And even then you would likely end up with some accompanying stinkies.  Usually if anything is left behind in the diaper you'll end up with yucky buildup and the diapers not getting clean enough.  You could always try putting clean diapers through a really hot wash without any detergent or anything and see what happens.  If you have any detergent buildup or anything that would pull it out or at least show you that it's there (you'll see bubbles/film in the water from the leftover detergent).  I would recommend different stripping methods for different issues though.

Also, if you're not having problems during the day it's probably not a buildup problem creating lack of absorbency.  You could try it out though, put some water on the diapers and see if they soak it up.  Keep in mind that anything with a stay-dry layer like BG pockets, freetimes, etc. probably will need a little bit of pressure to push it through that stay-dry layer.  It doesn't soak up fluids like cotton would, for example.  You'll probably be able to see if it's not absorbing anything though.
  • Thank you ladies for all the suggestions! I really appreciate it and I have lots of ideas to try now :)
