Constipation, what else can I do for DD?

Since B turned one and started on wcm we have delt with constipation. I asked the dr at her last appt about what we could do and he said cut out bananas and try miralax. We've done both. She eats a ton of veggies and fruits that are high in fiber too. I'm almost positive the switch to wcm is causing the constipation but the dr said he wants her drinking at least 16 oz a day or eating more dairy. Any suggestions? I'm calling Monday to make an appt to talk to the pedi again and I have been writing down what she eats everyday so he can see what's going in. Any help is greatly appreciated. It makes me so sad to see DD cry and suffer when she poops.

  • hi there...for a while my little ones were constipated too...and so we were told diluted juice (apple juice and prune juice) would help and so would prune purees.  we did that and it helped some.  I've also been told that exercise helps.  good luck!  never fun to see lo in pain.

We do this too. She gets 3 oz juice with 5 oz of water a day and prunes at least once a day. I rub her little belly and push her legs to her chest to try and help too. Poor baby)0:

  • We struggled with constipation from 6 months to a year old. We would make sure DD had peaches, pears, prunes, or peas at just about every meal. Sweet potatoes also seem to help us. I also give her a teaspoon of flax oil in her oatmeal every morning. I don't give her white potato and only give her whole grains, no white rice, white bread, or white pasta. Have you talked with your doctor about soy or almond milk as an alternative to WCM?
  • We also struggle with this for our DD too. What seems to be working are buying the pitted prunes in a bag and raisins. She will eat a prune or two a day usually and some raisins. The puréed prunes stopped working for her. They actually don't taste bad. Just make sure they don't have pits.
  • Have you tried apples? I swear they work for myself and toddler son. Not apple juice with all the sugar but actual apples.

If she's eating so many fiber rich foods and not drinking a lot of water that can make constipation worse. If upping the water doesn't help, maybe try almond milk and see if her tummy can tolerate it better,

  • DD ended up in the hospital due to constipation, and we are pretty sure it was due to WCM. She has been on miralax daily and we switched to soy milk and have had no problems. You can get all the calcium you need from alternative milks and yogurts. DD eats a coconut milk yogurt that she loves. I would talk about switching off dairy and see if it helps.

  • If your LO is only drinking WCM and no water that could be a trigger too. I usually have the opposite problem with LO- she loves her beans, berries and other high fiber foods. At a year old LO was ok'd to drink as much water as she wanted to in a day. Applesauce is a binder while apples are not. I never portion out her food but I do try to give her reasonable amounts- she can eat a pound of blueberries if i let her
  • Our DD has a similar issue however she was diagnosed with a milk protein intolerance at 4 months old.  So when we switched to WCM we noticed a big change in her system.  She is off the WCM for two weeks, as well as rice and banana just to help her system while it adjusts again.  We are still on light yogurt and cheese for these two weeks.  It isn't helping - so my gut is telling me that the dairy all together needs to go.  But we will see.

Her pedi said to give her juice not water I guess the sugar in juice draws the liquid to the poop to make it softer, so she gets 3/4-juice to 1/4-water in her cups.  This past Saturday I gave her prune juice in that fashion and she straight up exploded!!  We have been back to the regular apple, cranberry and white grape and right back to the constipation as well.

Good luck!!  You're the Mom you know what's best do what your gut says!!
