Water broken? Advice...

Need some advice or someone who's had a similar situation to tell me what they did.
Last night while watching a movie laying on the couch I notice a leak. It happened suddenly. I went to the bathroom and there was about a teaspoon worth of clear fluid in my underwear. I decided to wear underwear to bed just in case it happened again. This morning I woke up and my underwear were again just a little wet. It's not pee because its clear and has no scent. I told my mom and she said its probably nothing because I'm not feeling contractions. Tonight it happened one more time. My husband and I decided we'll probably call the doc tomorrow morning when we wake up instead of going to the hospital because its been such a little amount. Has this happened to anyone before? What was your outcome? Pee, false alarm, or did they induce you?

Re: Water broken? Advice...

  • When my water broke there was no doubt, so I don't really know. It kind of sounds like it could be, or could just be pee even though you don't think it is. You could call l and d and ask the triage nurse before calling your OB in the morning. That is personally what I would do.

  • I would definitely go to L and D. My friend had her water leaking all day long, it doesn't always just burst. Also, no smell is amniotic fluid. They can do a really quick test to check if the fluid is urine or not. But it's best you call sooner than later.

  • The infections tend to come when they examine you in the hospital.... Nothing goes up there when you're at home to cause infection. If the fluid is clear without smell you can still wait to go to the hospital until your having regular contractions. But calling wont hurt if you trust your doc/midwife

Even without cervical checks you are still at risks for bacteria entering the cervix and possibly causing an infection as there is nothing there to block the bacteria that naturally occurs in every woman's vagina, you've got a wide open cervix and no membranes to protect baby.

Either way if OP suspects a leak I wouldn't sit around and twiddle my thumbs playing the "is this AF or pee" guessing game when the answer is as simple as a swab.

  • My water broke and I didn't have any contractions. I seriously don't know why your mom would say what she did. You need to call your Dr.

  • Your mom doesn't know what she's talking about.  Pee can be clear and without much smell at all.  If you really don't think it's pee, then you've been sitting around for far too long without contacting your OB.  If your water breaks or you have a leak, you have 24 hours to deliver the baby or there is a risk of infection.

  • I have had this going on myself the past few days. I was in bed laying down then vagunal fluids leaked out. It's been going on a few days now. Dr says its from my contractions body releasing fluids it is normal, it's our body's way of preparing for birth. Dr says she will come early. Good luck keep us posted!
  • If you suspect your water has broken or is leaking you need to call the doctor immediately, not wait it out. There is a risk of infection and it is a danger to the baby.

  • I would call your doctor this morning.  A simple test will tell you what's going on.

  • This is a question that doctors get all the time. It's a super simple test to check. Just get it done, even if you have to go to l&d. It will give you peace of mind. Could be nothing, but if it is AF, you'll want to know. It's definitely possible that it's just a tiny leak, but that still counts as your water being broken.

  • When my water broke it was just a tiny leak every now and then. Absolutely no contractions. The way I figured out that it was my water that broke, was by sitting on the toilet and rocking back and forth to see if more came out. That's a sure way to know. My water didn't fully break until they did a dilation check. Then the whoosh came. That was about 7 hrs after I first noticed some fluid.

  • My sister had a slow leak, and had no idea her water had broken until she got to the hospital.  She went in due to contractions, and they told her that her water had broken.  She was 35 weeks.  Looking back on it, she did notice that her panty-liners were wetter than normal, but she didn't think anything of it.  So, it's possible for your AF to leak without knowing it.  You should call and get checked just to be safe.

  • I don't see why you would just wait it out? Like most of the other posts said, it's a simple test, and if it is AF then I was always told you need to deliver within 24 hours. I know someone said the infection is introduced by cervical checks, but there are other ways bacteria can enter, and not to mention other complications that can arise. They'd why they tell you to call your OB if you suspect it. Either way they need to know. It's pretty important.

  • Yup, you need to have a test done asap. It may not mean hospitalization if it did, but they will want to know how long you have been leaking and advise you on what to look for in regards to infection. My test for my daughter was a thin piece of paper that they wiped across the outside of my vagina. No nees to get in there and introduce bacteria. I would call again and express concern. It's your body (you know it well) and they cannot treat you over the phone for this.
