My bags are already packed but it suddenly occurred to me that I have nothing for the shower and labor tub. My hospital has a jetted tub and a shower for use during labor and since I'm trying to go drug free this time I plan on taking advantage of it. For you moms who plan on laboring/delivering in the shower or tub are you thinking that you will do it naked or in a swimsuit? As of now I have nothing packed. I labored in a hospital gown with DS, but I had an epidural so I was in bed the whole time. I'm not super modest and don't necessarily care if the nurses and DH see me naked, I'm just not sure what the "norm" is for these situations. I see lots of moms choose to be naked in birth center births, but is that the standard for hospitals as well?
So a non clicky poll: How do you plan on laboring?
1. Naked
2. Fully covered in a hospital gown or one you brought from home
3. Something up top (like a tank/sports bra) and nothing on the bottom.
I wish my hospital had a tub. I'd love to birth in one or at least cope with contractions med free for a while on a soothing tub. If I were in your situation I'd just have sports bra on and that's it. No point in covering the lady parts when your trying to push something out of it.
For the tub, I'm going to bring an extra sleep bra that I have. I prefer to have these girls wrangled in the water I won't have anything on the bottom.
For laboring in the room, I will have one of my loose old navy jersey knit skirts and a bra. I already don't like stuff touching my belly, and I'm quite certain I'll feel the same in labor.
I have gone with option 1 both times. But both were home water births. In your situation I would probably pack a sports bra or some other comfy bra like top just to have the option in case there are more people coming and going and you don't end up feeling comfortable. I knew that the only people that would be there were going to be me, DH, MW and a baby care nurse. So I figured what the heck...
I'm going to pack a sports bra that I'd like to wear, but as a FTM, I'm not sure how it'll go. I'm not sure I'll care too much at that point, but I want to be prepared in case I do!
Thanks ladies. It seems like the general consensus is to just wear a sports bra up top and nothing on bottom, which makes sense since there will be so many checks down there.
I just went ahead and put a sports bra in my bag for labor. I already had a sports bra style of nursing bra in there but I don't want it to get messed up during labor and then I can't wear it when I actually need it to nurse baby.
Bathing suit top, I'll bring bottoms too, but I don't think I wore them last time because its easier for the MW to check if you don't have bottoms on. I was just in the tub though. I wouldn't have stood around in a shower with no bottoms on. But I think a bathing suit is much more comfortable in the water than a sports bra or tank top.
I'm a birthing center mom, so no real input on hospital specific.
With DS1 I though I'd do a bikini top. Had one that offered plenty of skin for baby on chest after he was born. I don't consider myself a prude, but I'm pretty modest with being naked in front of anyone but my fam. As it turns out, labor makes you a whoooooole different person. I was in full swing when I reached the birthing center. I walked through the doors, stripped naked and said "take me to the tub!" Not at all my plan! I was buck nekkid the whole time an couldn't have cared less. I just wanted to be free from ANY restraints.
Bikini top. Like a PP said it will be more comfortable than a sport bra and offer skin to skin with her with out having to wrestle out of a wet sports bra.
This makes good sense. Unfortunately none of my bikini tops can contain my ginormous pregnant boobs anymore. I chose a sports bra that is designed for low impact activity, so it's not very restricting and easy to slip off over my head after she's born.
I usually take my beband and wear it as a bra throughout labor. I don't like the slits in the maternity gowns leaving me so exposed. I have two bebands, so I'lljust wear one of them into the tub. It's what I did with dd1.
ETA: even with how un-modest the whole labor process is, I still wanted to be covered some. I never had any desire to be completely naked, even in the tub.
January 2009: Goodbye TR (13 weeks)
February 2010: Welcome DD1!
March 2011: Welcome DD2!
I also plan on going med free and spending most of my labor in the tub and I will be in my swimsuit. I saw a lady on a video in our birthing class though that drapped a towel over her and it suctioned to her body under water, so that's an option too. Swimsuit is what I think I'll be most comfortable in!
I vote naked. I am pretty conservative about my body, but when I was in labor I could give a rats ass who saw me naked. I was uncomfortable wearing anything and labored almost naked almost the entire time (at the birth center.) When I transferred I was wearing nothing but a robe upon arrival and as soon as I got into my room, off it went. I was hot, uncomfortable, and I probably would have eaten someone if they offered me clothes. I never got in a tub or shower while I was there since DD was being monitored constantly, but naked was best for me. I had three men deliver DD I had never met and I still don't care. When they put her on my chest there was no struggling with clothes and she amazingly climbed right to my breast! I'm emotional thinking about it.
So... After my long story, I say do whatever you are comfortable with. No one is going to tell you what to do, you are delivering a baby.
I should also say that I packed a bikini but never even took it out of the bag!

I got a nursing sports bra to wear. I'll probably have a gown on at first but my guess is it'll get gross and I'll get hot so it'll probably come off. I went the sports bra route so my big girls aren't flopping around and making me even more uncomfortable than I'll already be. And I got a nursing one so I have easy access to nurse immediately.
I was naked for most of it. At home because I kept vomiting and then at the hospital because I went into the tub. Once I was out of the tub I *think* I slipped on a hospital gown? I can't remember. I am quite modest and for some reason that went right out the window.
This time I am planning a home birth, maybe with a labour tub... I think I will get a sporty nursing bra and bottoms if I want them and a light robe out of the tub.
Naked or a sports bra for me. Depends how I feel. The sports bra would seriously be to support these DDs only. They are pulling a baby from my vagina. I don't care if they see my boobs.
Bra for me, only bc it's more comfortable than my ginormous boobs being all over the place.
Also, in case you didn't already, make sure to ask your dr about their policies about the shower/tubs in the rooms. I have been advised just because its there doesn't mean all dr's allow use of it. At my hospital you actually have to have written permission from your dr to use the shower in the LD room.
I'm late to the question, but with DD I didn't pack anything for the tub. My midwife dipped a towel in the water and then covered my torso with it. The warmth felt great. Every few minutes DH repeated the process. I put a gown on after getting out of the tub to push, but it came off during the last couple pushes so that I could have immediate skin to skin contact. Like several posters, I'm highly modest and didn't care a bit about what people saw that day. I plan on doing everything pretty much the same for this delivery too.
Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.
I am actually having a water birth, so I will be in the tub for quite a bit of my labor and delivery. I won't be wearing anything on the bottom. I am just bringing a few bikini tops to wear. The nurse manager recommended bringing more than one, because if you get out of the tub it takes awhile for the top to dry and it gets cold.
Covered as much as possible. Definitely the gown and probably a robe that I can tie on top of that so at least my boobs will not be on display. Ideally something covering my lady parts from the sides at least so you can only see my vagina if stand write in front of it but not from the sides. I wonder if something like that is available. I am extremely worried of being naked and embarassed during this process.
I'm planning to bring a bathing suit for the shower/tub, especially since I'll probably have visitors, but I imagine I'll probably end up at least bottomless.

I felt just like you describe before actually being in labor. I was very concerned about displaying myself and wanted nothing to do with it. I actually judged others who did. But, labor is like nothing you can expect, and along with surges you have your hormones. For most people, the last thing they care about are their clothes. I think if this is something that is VERY important to you, that you may want to voice that concern sooner rather than later so your support team can make sure you are covered up.

My nips have been super sensitive this pregnancy so i will wear a nursing bra. I've been using them since first trimester because the bands on reg bras hurt my chest/heartburn. I'll use a robe for walking around in active labour and just the bra for the tub

I have am with a midwife practice and they (and the hospital) allow labor in the tub, not delivery.
I didn't think about this before my first but as labor cane on, i still felt a bit 'shy'. For example, as I was waiting for the doula to arrive, I got out of the shower (at home) and got dressed... I told her this and her response was 'why?'. By the time we got to the hospital, I stripped down and jumped in the shower, then got out and was literally baring all to anyone around and didn't care until my son was born.
For various reasons, I wasn't allowed to get into water with my second, so I think I gave birth in a gown. Not sure.
In any case, if I'm able to get into water at the hospital this time, it'll probably be naked. Clothes at that point are really just a nuisance.
I plan on labor without meds and possibly in tub/shower at the hospital. Ill wear a bathing suit, but if you feel more comfy naked its not like they have seen it regularly
We're planning an at home water birth and I plan on just a tank top until pushing starts and then taking it off for skin to skin. We'll just have to make sure all the curtains are closed!
Hospital gown. The hospital where I delivered DS didn't allow bras of any kind to be worn during labor; I have no idea if this hospital has the same rules or not but I can't imagine having the restriction of a bra on during labor.
I'm still undecided if I want to labor in the tub or not, knowing how uncomfortable I'll be when it comes time to push. I might pack a bathing suit top, just in case.
