Our pedi gave us the go ahead to start stage 1 fruits and veggies at LO's 4 month appointment. A couple days ago I tried giving her sweet potato as well as oatmeal. She didn't seem all that interested and seemed to find the experience strange. Not sure if it was the food, the spoon, or what. I interpret it as her not being ready, so we're going to wait a couple weeks and try again. I don't plan to give her much cereal but to focus on fruits and veggies.
last week we started. We tried avacado he seemed to like it. Then a few days later he had bananas cut with BM. He devoured them and prefers that to the avacado. I plan on making sweet potatoes and squash next week for him!
I was going to wait to introduce rice cereal until this week but all signs pointed to that she was ready. Our first solid was rice cereal last week, which she seemed fine with. Opened her mouth for the spoon, sucked up the liquidy parts. She did thrust some of it out but usually would eat 1 tbsp. mixed with .5-1 oz of formula.
Our first vegetable was Squash, which I gave her yesterday. She seemed to really like it-opening her mouth up, sucking it up, getting excited when I would spoon more onto the spoon. I mixed in some rice cereal yesterday, and today just gave it to her straight. For this week I'll give her some rice cereal and squash in the morning, and just squash at night (she seems to be more excited about the solids at night time, when she's more hungry)
Little Riley-our first little girl coming March 1st, 2013 (or sometime around there;)
For the record, our Ped recommends introducing solids like you get meals in a restaurant-breads first (rice cereal, oatmeal, etc), salad (vegetables), entrée (meats), dessert (fruit), since babies will always prefer sweet fruits to vegetables and might fuss if you feed them veggies instead of fruit (not sure how true this is).
Personally, neither my husband or I eat a lot of grains, so I'm going to focus more in the veggies and actual foods

We just started DD on oatmeal at a little over 5 months. I had planned to wait until 6 months but she was showing major interest in our food and was getting frustrated every time DH and I ate in front of her. We don't give her a lot of oatmeal yet but she really enjoys it.
We tried sweet potato yesterday (just shy of 5 months) and it was a big fat fail. He didn't know to open his mouth and when we did get some in, he just pushed it back out and made a face. lol we'll try again in a week or so
We got the ok from our ped at our 4 month appointment to start solids any time. We started with carrots at about 4 mos & 1 week....they were a huge success...he was super messy, but seemed to really like them.
So far LO has had carrots & squash...later this week we'll introduce zucchini or peas. Right now we just feed him at dinner, but he eats about 2oz of food, then BF and he's content.
We skipped the rice cereal all together & just went straight for the veggies. After he gets a few under his belt, so to speak, we'll introduce fruits.

This site has great info, and says that the no fruits before veggies thing isn't true: https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/order-of-introducing-solid-foods.htm#.Ugpha2S9Kc0
