Sloppy joe's question...

Am I the only one who makes the meat for sloppy joes with beans in it?? Like, I essentially make a chili. With beans. And put it in a bun with coleslaw and grated cheese.
DH says I'm totally wrong, and beans have no place in sloppy joes... So I looked up recipes online last night, and none of them have beans in them! Mind blown! Growing up, our sloppy joes always had beans...... Is it just me?

Re: Sloppy joe's question...

  • Yeah, it's you. Chili has beans and taste completely different to me than sloppy joes. Both are delicious, but different. Chili has more liquid and sloppy joe is more sticky? Does that make any sense?

  • Nooo beans in sloppy joes, I've never heard of that.  Chili and joes are two totally different tasting things to me.

Maybe growing up it was to stretch food or something..?  I know my mom used to add beans to a lot of things, made things go further?

  • no beans in sloppy joes.
Dh's Mom does a BBQ bean thing for chili.
  • Ok. It's just me. My mom would make us chili for dinner, then use the leftovers for sloppy joes the next day. I just always thought they were the same thing.

    I feel so... so.... deceived!

  • @lalamama81 Did you shred the zucchini? and when did you add it?
Before or after the beans? ;)
  • I've only had sloppy joes as an adult and i not put beans in them. Or coleslaw and cheese. Gross.

I put ketchup on mine. Is that weird?
Like in addition to all the ketchup in them? You really like you some ketchup huh? ;)

I put nothing on mine, but a good toasted bun is a must. I need to make sloppy joes. DD hates them though.
  • Now I really want sloppy joes. And I want to try adding zucchini a la Lala

I always find it jaw dropping that you health nuts eat sloppy joes, every time they're mentioned I'm taken aback.
If you're making from scratch its really only ground meat, tomato paste/sauce/ketchup and spices. Is it super good for you? No. But I can think of far worse.
I know they're not all that bad if made from scratch, I'm just used to all the fancy sounding meals that you guys talk about, throw sloppy joe in there and it just tickles me. Not in a bad way though, promise.
Come eat mine...they're too good to eat and think at the same time. Yummy!
  • @katemw will you share your recipe please? I have never had beans in sloppy joes and I agree with others that sloppy joes and chili are very different things.

  • No beans in sloppy joes!

I have been served chili with spaghetti noodles though.

Nor are sloppy joes with beans, I assure you, heh heh.

I had them tonight without beans! They were good! And, Hav, I think mine were really healthy. I mean, the name certainly doesn't imply health, but mine was just a handful of ingredients, on whole wheat buns, with cheese and homemade coleslaw.

This is a serious question, but what other kind is there?
  • @QueSyrah Here's a link to the recipe for the dressing:

We didn't buy a pre-packaged coleslaw mix either. I shredded a whole green cabbage, half a red one, and 2-3 carrots.

  • I've never had beans in one! But then I don't think I've had a sloppy Joe since I was 10 or so. My siblings wouldn't eat them so my mom stopped making them and my kids won't go near something like that (they don't eat saucy things or ground meat) so there's no point in making them!

This is me too. I made sloppy joes without beans once. It tastes blah. Sloppy joes to me is chilli on a bun and nobody will convince me that sloppy joes without beans tastes better.

I mean, I know about restaurant and delis. I've never seen anything like that in the store. I am not a big slaw person, but if I do eat it, its always some recipe without too much or any mayo.

The one my mom uses basically just tastes like mayo which is probably why I hate coleslaw. I've had some in restaurants that were vinegar based and those I like.

  • I just can't get over this, beans aside, sloppy joes and chili don't even taste remotely similar to me!
They're not, they're two completely different foods.
That's like saying a chicken wing and chicken tenders taste the same...

  • Will someone share their recipe for sloppy joes? I have never made them and you are making them sound really good. I don't want to just pick a random Internet one if someone here has a tried and true. Thanks!

I use this, have for years. But I lessen the celery to 1 stalk.

    Or like Chili and Spaghetti.
  • Ok, I THINK this is the recipe I usually use...but it doesn't look exactly like I make it? I add a bit of BBQ sauce and I don't add the jalapeño. I take the easy way out and put red pepper flakes in there. ;)

Who knew sloppy joes could be such a hot topic! 2 pages.

Also, just because there are beans in the sloppy joes, doesn't mean they taste like chili right?

I've never had them with beans.
Not necessarily, as long as someone is actually making sloppy joes... even if beans (what the eff) are added, it wouldn't taste like chili.  They use different ingredients, totally!

But they just don't go IN there.  Sloppy joes don't have beans.
