Weaning off the bottle

How did you do it?? DS still takes 4 a day. He's on neocate due to a dairy intolerance so we can't put him on WCM. We will probably start giving him almond milk but his GI dr said to wait until he sees the allergist this month (so we know if he has an allergy or not). I've tried giving him his formula in a sippy--he took two sips and threw the cup down. He drinks water from a sippy cup and straw cup just fine so I'm not sure where to go from here or how to drop bottles. What did you do?

Re: Weaning off the bottle

  • We just stopped.

DD was on formula and one day instead of handing her a bottle.... I handed her a sippy cup. It was a soft lid sippy cup. But she just went with it! And now she's a year. Off formula and bottles!

Have you tried giving him neocate in a straw sippy? Was it a soft or hard lid? Just keep giving it to him. He will realize it is his only option and will take it. Just stick to it! My friend just got her son off bottles! She would give in and give him one here and there and finally she just had to stop and stick to it!

  • I'm in the same boat. I just tried to give him some milk in a sippy (which he drinks water & juice from)...he took a few sips & that was that. I put it in the fridge & gave it back to him at lunch. He drank some more and then was done. I tried putting it in a cup with a straw (that he also has drank from) but nothing! My friend said that one day she just put the bottles away & that was it. Maybe I'll try that??

  • DD would have only two oz in a bottle and the rest in a sippy cup. When the bottle ran out she wanted more and realized a soppy had milk in it...we did this rotation with every feeding. Finally I put all of it in a sippy with no bottle and she has been off bottles since. It took 3 days with this method for her to be 100% off the bottle.

  • DD was obsessed with her bottle so I started the transition at about 11 months because I thought it would take forever. It took 2 weeks. I started giving her formula in her sippy. The first time she took it fine. The second time she cried, so I caved and gave her the bottle. Then I found that if I opened the sippy and showed her there was formula in it instead of water she was much more receptive to it. From then it was just a matter of continuing to offer the sippy and putting the bottles out of sight. She quickly figured out that food now came from it instead of the bottle.
