Ounces per feeding

How much is your LO eating in a feeding and how often? My LO is 12 weeks old, weighs 12lbs, eats 28oz per day, 4oz every 2 hours. She sttn so has to eat that often to get her volume in. She's been on 4oz for about 2 weeks now, but I'm wondering about upping her to 5. She is a baby that will keep eating until the bottle runs dry. If I give her too much it's a puke fest. I would love for her to go 3 hrs between feedings.

Also, does anyone use 4oz bottles to make 5oz or did you just go to the next size? I know it's inevitable to have to get the next size, but I'm just curious.

Re: Ounces per feeding

  • My LO eats 6 oz at a time, sometimes more. He eats every 4 hours or so and sttn most nights. I use 8 oz bottles but because I use dr. Browns bottles and if you overfill them, they leak.

  • The boys sleep 11hrs at night without eating so they eat a lot during the day. They were eating 6oz 6 times a day but around 4 months dropped a feeding so I upped them to 7oz 5 times a day.

  • Thanks. I think I may try 5oz and see what happens.

  • Mine gets 5oz every 3 hours. Sometimes he takes it all sometimes he doesn't. He does this all day and then goes down around 9:30 or 10:00 and wake between 6:30 and 7:30. He let us know when he needed his amount upped! You could tell the 4 ounces wasn't satisfying him anymore.

We do 6 oz 6 times a day... sometimes another few oz before bed if it has been a while since his last bottle. Sometimes he goes 2 hrs, sometimes 4. We feed on demand and it continues to be inconsistent but the amount in 24 hours varies only a little.

Eta he has just started to sttn (again) at 15 weeks.

  • I am (thankfully) still able to exclusively pump, so LO gets only breastmilk for now, but she is 10 weeks, 12 lbs, and takes 4.5 oz about every 2.5 to 3 hours- 6 or 7 bottles total depending on when she wakes up (on the weekends sometimes she sleeps right through the time we usually give her the first bottle).

Sometimes she finishes the bottle quickly, sometimes she doesn't finish it at all. Sometimes she takes half and then then the rest of it after a break before her nap. Her daily total is usually between 23 and 29 oz. She has her last bottle (dream feed) around 11 pm and sleeps at least until 7:00 am (sometimes we have to wake her up so H can feed her before work while I pump), and on the weekends as late as 9:00.

  • She gets 4 oz every 2-2.5 hours. I EP so I'm not sure what ill do if she needs more. I typically pump more than 4oz per session but I save that in the fridge for feedings if I haven't had a chance to pump again before she's hungry. She is almost 11 weeks.
  • DD is 12 weeks today, she has 4 and a half ozs every 3 hours.

  • Wow, your babies eat a lot compared to mine.  The most I have ever seen Natalie eat is 4oz at one time.  She is Bf'd mostly, but has recently taken bottles while I am at work and rarely finishes the 4oz bottles I send with her.  She is gaining weight, so I am sure everything is ok.  She eats every three hours and only wakes one to maybe two times at night.
  • My LO will be 3 months on Wednesday and is around 12lbs as well. She eats 6 times a day and gets 4 and half oz every 3 hours except her last bottle she gets 5 oz and she sleeps through the night.

I switched to the born free 5oz bottles when the dr told me to start giving her 4 and half oz. I love them!

  • DD will be 13 weeks & I have upped her bottles to 5 oz.  She doesn't always drink it all, but I offer it to her at every feeding.  Lately, she will go as long as 4 hours in between feedings.  She doesn't sttn yet, though.  I use the 9 oz Avent bottles.

If the bottles are breast milk than your body has prob increased calories so she doesn't need as much volume.
