Maternity Photos

[Sorry if this has been discussed recently and I somehow missed it!]

For those thinking about doing a maternity photo shoot, when are you planning to do them? I'm thinking maybe mid October so we can (hopefully) get pretty outdoor fall photos. But that puts me around 28-29 weeks. I personally don't want a huge bump for photos, but that might not be quite big enough (for a FTM) as far as the bump size goes. So, what are you ladies thinking?

Re: Maternity Photos

  • I was definitely thinking October would be prettiest but I think most people wait until around 30 weeks to have a nice round bump. I have resorted myself to nice cute boots and scarves :)

  • Fall pictures would be beautiful! I'm waiting til the 35-36 mark. I got them done at that time with my first pregnancy and I loved them.  I did a photo shoot only wearing a black sheet and I felt very sexy and empowered.

I'm definitely planning on playing in the snow. My photog has done my engagements and wedding reception so I'm hoping if we book out maternity, and newborn sessions I can get a full circle discount  :-bd

ETA; And it would be amazing to get some Christmas themed shots.

I think boots and scarves will be super cute! It'll probably be in the 40's and 50's here by Oct so that might still be my wardrobe. For us, it usually starts raining by late Oct and rains pretty much every day until May. I wouldn't mind snowing pics, but we don't usually get old enough for much snow - just rain, rain, rain.

  • I always do it at 33-34 weeks.  28-29 is way too early, IMO.

  • Too early! I would wait to 35 if it is your first!
  • I think around 32-34 weeks is best because you have a good size bump but you're not quite at the super uncomfortable stage either.

I personally am not having them done unless I do some selfies with my own camera lol. We're having newborn portraits done instead and the money for maternity photos could be more cloth diapers lol. :P
  • Since I'm showing so much, I'm sticking with mid- late Oct. I don't want to be huge in them LOL

  • I was 26 weeks with DS when I had them done and they turned out nicely, bump wise. I actually thought I looked pretty big so I'm glad I didn't wait longer. I'm sure bump size will vary greatly from person to person though.

  • My husband and I are photographers, and generally do them around 35 weeks. When my best friend had hers done with us, her water broke on our driveway immediately following - now we let parents know that it's a risk that comes with our package ;) haha.

I'm going to have mine done in October so I'm not a house and am still mobile enough to get some great shots!

  • Ill prob get mine around 30 weeks- The fall is beautiful where i live and hopefully ill be able to get some outdoor shots.

  • Most photographers recommend between 32-36 weeks. We will be having them done sometime in late November, probably Thanksgiving weekend.

  • I'm a photog too. I refuse to do them before 32w unless its multiples. I say 32-35 is best. You want a definite bump and usually in there you have a good bump but are not uncomfortable big. You need it to be rounded out more. I have a friend who harassed me for photos from 28w on and I told her I'd tell her when it was the right time because she wasn't bump enough for them. I know as a FTM you'll feel huge at like 25w, but you're not.

  • I've had the same dilemma.  I want to do an outdoor shoot if possible.  Living in the midwest, we get snow in late October and November.  I'm hoping that I can make early November work.  I will only be 29-30 weeks.  I'm afraid to wait later than that with all the holidays and such.  Prices of photographers seems to skyrocket during the holidays.  Plus, it'll be so hard to schedule around the holidays.

  • I actually just set up our Maternity session. Yup it's Mid October because I will be big but not uncomfortably big! Now what to wear . . . . .
