Braxton hicks vs preterm labor?

I had some contractions for an hour or so earlier today and am having them again now. They are super uncomfortable, and while I haven't been timing how long they last I've definitely had at least 4 in the past 20-25 minutes. I am resting and drinking water and wondering when I should be concerned/call the doctor if they don't stop soon? Right now I am sitting and can feel them in my back too which concerns me. If they don't stop in the next hour or so I will call the doctor no matter what just to be safe, but I am wondering if this sounds like preterm labor to any of you ladies?

Call your doctor/hospital now, better safe than sorry no matter what.

  • Call your doctor or go in. My doctor wanted me to come in if I had more than six contractions an hour.

  • Call your doctor now, do not wait. My PTL felt just like BH except more frequent and each contraction lasted longer. PTL is not something to mess with, when in doubt always err on the side of caution.

Thanks ladies. I timed them shortly after posting this last night and they were very regular (every 5 min, lasted 20 seconds or so) so I called the doctor and went in for monitoring. As soon as I put on the hospital gown and climbed onto the bed I felt a huge relief in my abdomen and knew they had stopped (of course). But they checked me and the babies and everything looked fine, my cervix was tightly closed.

Then as they were unhooking me from all the monitors to discharge me, the contraction monitor was last to come off, and sure enough--another contraction. I started having them regularly again (every 2-3 minutes) although they were much less severe. The doctor confirmed that they weren't doing anything to thin out/open up my cervix, but she kept me an hour or two for monitoring and hooked me up to an IV to make sure I was hydrated.

It was a long night and everything seems to be fine, but I'm glad I went in.

  • I'm glad everything is OK! I agree with the other ladies that if you are ever concerned, call and go in for monitoring. Sending lots of baby cooking vibes!
