Painful Braxton Hicks?

Was grocery shopping with my mom and daughter and start having a contraction to the point I couldn't catch my breath while i was putting the groceries away. I've been having minor, nearly painless ones all week and lower back pain since this morning and was trying to sleep it off with an afternoon nap, but that didn't work. I had Josh take over with the groceries and am laying down now. I've had about 3 on this level in the last 30-40 minutes. Any suggestions on how to ease these up and at what point should I call the doctor? I have an appointment Tuesday and I will definitely bring it up then.
NOPE.

Re: Painful Braxton Hicks?

  • Last night I started feeling what I believe was BH. It startled me. I had to catch my breath.'And now tonight I think that's what I'm feeling again. But I don't know how to be sure.. If its bothersome tomorrow I'm going to call my Dr.

  • From my understanding its if you have 4 in an hour then call your OB or call the hospital to see if they want to see you. BH at this stage shouldn't be painful so I would call your OB just to make sure

  • I thought the whole point of BH is that they aren't painful?

Hydrate, lay on your left side. I will say my BH with my 2nd were painful/highly uncomfortable, much more than with my first.

  • With pain I would call right away.  If they aren't worried, that's one thing but I wouldn't feel comfortable making that call on my own.  But in the mean time drink plenty of water and lay on your left side.  I'm on #3 and have never had a painful BH.

  • Thanks everyone. I am laying down and drinking a bottle of water. I think I may have let myself get dehydrated. Still having them but not as painful and long lasting now. The shortness of breath sucks.
    NOPE.
  • Get hydrated!! I had painful ones this week while on vacation! I was doing to much chasing around after my 2 year old so I am
    Sure that didn't help!
  • If they really hurt, you should call your doctor instead of asking people on the internet. Chances are you are probably dehydrated, but it could really be something.

This. Those don't sound like BH but real contractions. You should be calling your doctor

  • If they are truly painful then you will need to call and most likely they will want you to go to the ER to be monitored. I had painful ones with my 2nd daughter and went in, they were BH and I was severely dehydrated.

That's what I thought with both #1 and #2 however from trips to the ER with what I thought were real contractions I've heard from 2 different OBs that BH can be painful, especially if coupled with dehydration. However all OBs will say if you have timetable pains that don't go away with rest and hydration you should seek help.

Sounds good, but I stand by OP needing to call vs. asking the Bump M.D. ;)
  • I had really painful BH yesterday and it was in an odd place. It was right under my left rib. I'm going to wait and see if it happens again before asking OB about it. It took my breath away and it lasted about a minute. Not sure if its BH since its so high up. Anyone had BH this high up?

I agree. But just sharing that they can in fact be painful BH. It is after all your uterus contracting.

  • Oh I know what you meant. Sorry, I meant to say that! :)
  • No worries I got my big girl panties on tonight :)

This as well. I had these along with a slight ache in my lady bits. Turned out I had a bv infection which was what was causing them. Not good to leave untreated.

Just pay attention to how you feel and hope they stop soon :)
