Parenting after a Loss

Crib sleeping update

It's been a full week of DD sleeping in her crib, or at least attempting it. It has gone...okay. The first night she STTN, and I felt like a rock star. The second night she woke up every 2 hrs. The next night she woke up every 45 minutes. And the following few nights were several wake ups at various intervals. Not to mention, it takes forever to put her down (an hour or more). I feel like a walking corpse, I'm so tired. Three of those nights I put her back in her bassinet so I could catch a few hours, and she definitely sleeps her best in there. I'm starting to think that maybe I rushed her into this, and I need to back off. I absolutely must get her out of the bassinet though because she is way too big for it. I'm considering trying the PnP in our room, but I really don't want another change that I'm going to have move her out of again. At least the crib is the final frontier; I really don't need to move her out of that for many years since it converts to a big girl bed. Thoughts? I read posts on here of LOs moving to their cribs and being absolutely fine with it, which makes me think I'm rushing her? She's not scared or screaming when she wakes up, just alert and chats to herself for a while before crying for mommy. And the nights that she has made it until morning she's smiling in there when I go to get her. She's also in the four month wakeful and teething, so those factors are at play too. What would you do if you were me; keep trying, or bring her back in our room for another month or so? The one thing I haven't tried is me sleeping on an air mattress next to the crib

Could you take her crib sheet and sleep with it tonight? I have heard that if it smells like mom that can help with the transition. I'm sorry that it didn't go well. We had a tough first week into crib also but it has gotten back to normal now. Good luck!

Good idea with sleeping with her crib sheet, I will definitely try that. How did you help your LO with the transition? How long did it take?

  • I don't know what kind of bassinet you have but we had one where I could detach it and carry it - so I just put the bassinet in the crib with him in the bassinet for about a week.  If I remember correctly I don't think he had any differences in his sleep habits then when I took it away.  But he would wake up frequently through the night anyway until 10 months when I did a modified-cry-it-out-sleep-training thing.  I still look back on months 5 - 10 of his development as the time when DH and I got the least amount of sleep and were just really zombies and in a pretty bad mood for five months!

  • I would stick with it. It took a couple weeks for DD1 to start sleeping well in her crib. Try taking a lovey or something and sticking it in your shirt. Then she'll have your smell.

  • Thank you ladies. We're gonna get a new white noise machine today (currently using the sleep sheep, but don't like how the sound stops suddenly instead of fading out). I'll also sleep with a crib sheet and maybe put a drop or two of breast milk on it. Hopefully something will help!

  • I am sorry it isn't going well. I don't know if this is encouragement or not, but I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. We've been sleeping in the crib for 2 months and she still hates it. She's finally gotten to the point where she'll at least tolerate being patted on her belly until she stops crying and falls asleep, but she still wakes up at least 4 times a night. Every night. For 2 months. I'm not trying to scare you, and I certainly hope it goes better and faster for you, but just know you're not alone if it takes a while! ((((HUGS))) I feel ya on the walking corpse!

  • I've started putting Austin in his crib for naps. My original plan was the crib from Day1, but the apnea monitor changed that plan. We are hoping to get him in his crib in the next couple of weeks. He definitely is a worse sleeper in his crib than anywhere else, but he gets a little better each nap. Good luck!

  • Thanks again. We got a Baby Einstein Infant Soother yesterday. My hope is that we can get her to associate it with sleepy time and I can one day get her to fall asleep while listening/watching it while I pat her. We have a long way to go, but so far she likes it. It doesn't make her sleepy at all, but she does like it!

  • Let us know how it goes! It was a rough transition but you just have to remember to stick with it. Do you swaddle? We started just to convert to the crib from the RnP. It was only a few weeks to get her used to laying on an open flat surface. Then once she got in the habit I stopped. I know it's hot out there so it may not be an option. Also we leave the noise machine on all night. I find it really helps.
