Flying with baby?

So we just booked our tickets to fly home for my brother's wedding. We got the baby a seat and we're planning on bringing the carseat, but the guidelines that delta has are a bit vague. C will be almost 6 months when we fly and won't be on solids yet...hopefully ;)  and she is EBF. I know I can check her stroller at the gate but I don't know if ticketed infants are allowed the same carry on rules as adults? Could DH and I each bring our own carry on suitcase and an extra with her stuff in it? Or would that just be too much to deal with and we should just suck it up and check a bag? Also, any other tips you can give me on traveling with an infant? Thanks for any input you have, I just don't have any experience in the area, obviously!

Re: Flying with baby?

  • I traveled with my LO when she was 6 weeks old.  I flew JetBlue, so I was able to check a bag.  On the airplane itself, I brought the diaper bag, boppy, and LO on board. I gate checked both her stroller and car seat, so it was waiting for me when I got off the plane (even for my connecting flight through JFK).

If you are bringing the car seat, get a car seat bag.  I got mine at BRU for like $15 and it was big and orange, very bright to pick it out of the crowd.  Plus, it protects it while it's in the plane hold.

Sadly, I would suck it up and check a bag.  The good news, is it takes a bit of time to get organized after the flight (putting the car seat in the stroller, diaper change in the restroom), that my checked bag was ready to be picked up when I finally got to the baggage claim.

My biggest advice (which I'm sure you've heard before) is have LO try to nurse on the way up and the landing in order to pop her ears.  Luckily, my LO had no problem with the pressure change.

    Enjoy your trip!

  • I am pretty sure you are allowed to check the car seat and stroller free of charge, and you are also allowed to being a diaper bag as LO's "carry on".

  • If you bought a plane ticket for your LO then they get a checked bag as well. Though my recommendation is that you carry on the bag/suitcase with your LOs belonging. I'm always nervous that it would be LOs bag that gets "lost". I can survive easily without my luggage but so much more difficult without LOs. Don't forget to bring along toys, books, etc for entertainment.

Like PP mentioned check your stroller and car seat at the gate, unless you think your LO will sleep in the car seat.

I've traveled/flown quite a bit with DD and just make sure to give yourself plenty of time for everything. From driving to the airport to getting to the gate.

  • You can gate check the stroller. You can check a carseat. With carry ons you are allowed a diaper bag etc and a carry on for yourself. We just flew last week.

  • Make sure you bring plenty of extra outfits. I traveled with DS1 to my brother's wedding when he was 6 months old. I made sure I had enough stuff in my bag for 2 days in case something happened. I also checked a bag with a weeks worth of diapers and wipes as well as food since he had started solids . If there is away to have amazon ship that stuff there I would. If she needs bottles for anything I rec Playtex drop ins and the Medela steam bags for travel.

We traveled with our G-Luxe stroller but since you have a carseat you may want to use a SnG or something lightweight you can get a gate check bag. I also had a Baby B'Aire travel vest that was amazing but we rented a carseat at our destination and didn't take one on the plane.

  • We just flew with DS on delta. Diaper bags don't "count" as anything so you can bring an additional carry on. Make sure you do pre boarding so you have time to get everything installed and everybody seated. You may want to ask for a seat belt extender for installing the car seat. Definitely expect to nurse during take off and landing. DS was super easy to fly with - way easier than my 3 year old lol
