Bed Sharing and Naps

Hi Ladies!

For those of you that bed share with your LOs, how are you putting your babies down for naps? DD was always a terrible napper early on (if left by herself in her bassinet), but I've since figured it out and we nap together, starting each nap with nursing her sleep while we lay together. I actually really like this, we love the cuddles, we are both generally well rested and DD naps peacefully since we're tummy to tummy. DD is almost 6 mos now and I'm a bit worried that she may become accustomed to napping this way and it might become a problem when I return to work.

There is also the crib - As DD becomes more mobile, she will need to nap in her crib if we don't nap together in bed, but any time I've tried to put her in her crib after nursing her to sleep, she wakes up...I need to figure out how to transition DD to napping in her crib.

How are you all putting your LOs down for naps? With bed sharing, have they become used to you being there beside them? TIA

Re: Bed Sharing and Naps

  • I actually wore my babies for all their naps until about 9 months or so when I started wearing them until they were asleep and then I'd lay them on the bed.  You could do the same (as in leave once baby is asleep).  I never worried about mobility - I was always within ear shot so I heard kiddo wake before they got into trouble.  We had bed rails to prevent rolling off and taught them to crawl off the bed as soon as they could crawl.

  • I also had a lousy napper who loved snuggling and eating during nap time. Unfortunately, I had to work this summer, so at 5mo I started sneaking out when she was deeply asleep. I slipped the tank top I was wearing over my nursing pillow and left it in bed with DD. it allowed her to smell me and have something snugly. Now at 7.5mo I just slip out and she is used it napping alone. As for the crib...I will need to figure out the crib nap. However, we don't have a crib, so that further complicates things :)

  • All of her weekend naps are with me. I love it! I worry that she'll get too used to it but not enough to stop. She's in DC full time, so I want all the snuggles I can get.
