do i REALLY need a changing pad?

originally wanted the naturepedic organic changing pad. it's $100. then i began thinking i'll just go with a non-organic changing pad, but with organic sheets. but now i'm thinking... do i really need a changing pad at all? i can change baby on the sofa or bed with the portable changing pad. meh? not a good idea?

Re: do i REALLY need a changing pad?

  • You don't have to have a changing pad or table if you don't want to . You can always change the baby on the floor, couch or bed . I personally love my changers . I have four kids and have used a changer for them all changing them on the couch or bed kills my back I much prefer having them at the changer height . It's a matter of preference . You could always forgo the changer to begin with until you see if changing them on the couch or bed works for you . You can always pick one up later if you decide you want one .

  • I also was someone who has used our changing pad every change. We have it on a waist high dresser so we never needed to purchase an extra piece of furniture.

For what it's worth, I got my pad from Target for $13 and my daughter thought being up on her pad was the best time of her day. She didn't know it wasn't organic or tempurpedic :) just make sure you buy two covers, it will be peed/pooped on eventually.

  • Seriously, your LO will be on the changing pad for just a few minutes - why splurge for organic ones unless you have $$$ to burn?

We use a changing pad on top of a dresser.  Used it for every diaper change since birth.  For the past 2 weeks we have to move the pad onto the floor when we change DS- he squirms nonstop and flips over, so it's no longer safe to change him on top of a dresser.

  • I didn't use my changing pad much during the first 9-10 months because we did most changes on the sofa/floor. But now diaper changes mostly occur in her room, hence changing pad. We also just have the changing pad on a waist high dresser. IMO, it's an essential item. I think spending $100 on an organic changing pad just has to do with your budget, and your organic convictions.

  • these are great responses. i feel good about not having an organic changing pad. i'll get a cheap one and two covers. i do have a dresser unit that i was planning on attaching it to, so no extra furniture needed.
  • Amazon has the summer infant brand changing pad for $14
  • We had this one for around 20 bucks and I considered that a splurge.  You can get changing pads very cheap.  I really liked the 4 sided pad.

I tried to change dd on the couch and it hurt my back in the early days.  The changing pad on a waist height dresser was key for me.  Now that we change her less often she gets changed on the floor or wherever, but we still use the changing pad on dresser frequently.

  • You will want to change your baby at waist level. Your back will be hurting from bad posture in breast feeding, carrying a baby and all. Sure you can change a baby hunched over on the sofa or on the floor, but for your back's sake and cleanup it's simply easier to just do it on a changing table or dresser. Organic changing pad is definitely a non-necessity.

  • We used the changer that was part of the pack n play until LO outgrew it at about 5 months.  Now, we change her on a bed.

  • With DD we changed her on the bed but we had some messes with that so no more of that we're getting a changing pad. Although I would never in a million years pay $100 for one even if I had the extra money to spend. You can get a cheap one for $20 and if this $100 one you're looking at is just for looks or something like that they do make changing pad covers and if you want custom ones look on etsy.
  • BRU sells an organic for around $50 if you're concerned.
