Babysitter Rules...(depressing article)

I read this article this morning, and even though I know this tragedy is not anything any of us WANTS to think about, it's a good idea to come up with ground rules before you need them...I don't plan on having anyone watch LO for awhile, but we will have grandparents watching DS while we are in the hospital...It amazes me how many common sense things need to be stated outright. Like, no MIL, you cannot drink a bottle of wine while watching DS (a glass would be ok, but she never stops at one...)...My parents just have track phones and din't even seem to know how to answer them, but MIL is constantly connected...as are ALL the teenagers (and 20 years olds too)...I am amazed by how many times we have to tell our employee to put away her phone. I would ask sitters not to bring their phones at all, but DH & I don't have a landline...

Re: Babysitter Rules...(depressing article)

  • Yeah the whole smartphone thing is getting out of hand. It's like people can't seem to put them down and it drives me insane. I have babysit a bunch of times and there is no way I'd go on my phone unless the children are asleep. They need my full attention, that's what I'm being paid for!

Luckily the only one watching my LO will be my mom (who has an old boring phone lol) and my aunt who might get a smartphone soon, but I highly doubt she'll ever use it because she doesn't know how. It is pretty sad that you have to ask someone not to use their phone when they're babysitting though.

Definitely a sad article, that could have been easily avoided.

  • What gets me is that baby sitter is 37 years old. Shouldn't know better better than to allow a child in a pool with NO flotation device? Then to walk away and play with her dog..? I hope they string her up by her toenails. What an idiot!

  • Not something I want to think about but definitely something I should. Too many people are on their phone all the time - checking Facebook or texting or whatever.  Stuff to me that is totally unimportant.  I don't get it.  Thank you for posting this!.

  • Thanks for sharing this! Definitely something to think about and mention to anyone watching lo. I agree with one of the pp too, this woman seems like an idiot!

  • yikes! Idk if restricting the phone would have even helped since the babysitter is going to find some distraction or another if they aren't set on paying attention. I'll never forget swinging by a friends house to say hi and finding the babysitter sitting at the computer when my friends 2 year old walked out of the bathroom sucking on a razor! I stepped on his foot to make him yell and grabbed it outta his mouth then proceeded to scream at the babysitter to GTFO. And she had the nerve to ask who was gonna pay her for watching the kids! My friend had only ran out to the store for a few minutes, imagine if I hadn't shown up when I did.

oh my gosh, that is terrifying! It really is amazing how quickly little ones can get into trouble, even when you are paying attention - and there are so many distractions everywhere now...Glad you happened to stop by, your friend's son is really lucky you were there!

  • Id loose it if this happened. I watch my two nephews who are three and one quite frequently and even without being on my phone there are enough distractions now that i have a newborn.

But i can honestly say the worst thing thats happened while i had them in my care was that the one year old bit his brother hard enough to bruise him. And this happened while i was nursing.

  • The issue here, IMO, isn't that the babysitter was using a smartphone but that she was an idiot who never should have been entrusted to watch children in the first place. There are always going to be distractions. The key is not leaving your child with someone if you aren't completely confident that that person is responsible enough to keep the child safe and appropriately supervised in your absence.

    I agree.

  • I am guilty of playing with my phone while babysitting. I use it, however, when the kids are watching Cars for the 12th time and I'm fearing for my sanity.

Other than that, I read this article and took home a lesson more about common sense than smart phone use.
