PIP: how do I liven up this dull nursery?

Once the crib was assembled I realized we made a mistake by picking a wood colour similar to the wall colour. Now I don't know what to do to liven it up. Any idea? Colourful elephant wall decals? A more colourful mobile? Or do I just re-paint? (The dresser is the same colour as the crib and the glider is white). TIA?

  • I would add more color on the walls with art or decals. If there is a window, colorful curtains. You can also do a colorful throw rug. Almost all of the color in our nursery is in wall decorations, curtains, and sheets. We have white furniture and beige carpet and walls.

  • Oh and I would check etsy for fun art. We got our decal and some art there for our nursery.

I would add a rug and curtains and wall art - teal or orange would be pretty.

  • We put our crib diagonally across the corner and it really jazzed up our son's nursery! It does take away some of your square footage, but it's not like we were going to be doing gymnastics in there just yet :) We also had a (fake) ficus tree in the nursery, which looked awesome with natural colors. Of course we had to move it back to the living room once he became obsessed with knocking it down!
  • Well you can take it two ways . Either bright or more nutrual . For bright I'd find some frames and paint them with bright colors then look for prints to go inside . You can find prints anywhere like calendar pages , fabric , scrapbook paper even wallpaper . You could mix it up with some photos too . You could pick up a colorful rug and curtains . If you want more nutrual then paint the frames in light gray , white and maybe one bright color like yellow then again find cute stuff to put inside then a nice rug and curtian . You also try looking for alphabet letters in different sizes to paint in either bright or nutrual colors and hang those up . I'd also have the crib and tree bookcase trade places and center the bed on that wall to creat more of a focal point right now it just doesn't look right .

I know what you mean. The setup drove us crazy. The room is deceivingly small from the photos and unfortunately this is the only layout that fits.

This... get a rug (I get mine from overstock.com... they have great deals), and some bright curtains (since the rest of the room is neutral I would probably go with a few colors/print).  You can add some colorful wall art from etsy or even ikea too.

  • I think Skip Hop decor would look nice in there.

  • Perhaps you could just repaint one accent wall behind the crib and dresser to set off the furniture. That way the other walls would pickup the color of the furniture but the big color pop would be behind it.

  • I actually like all neutral nurseries. What color were you thinking of adding? I'd almost stick with a neutral theme. Similar to the firs pic on this page https://blog.hatchmyhouse.com/2011/gender-neutral-nursery-decorating-tips/ Add curtains, wall art, decorate...but stay neutral

I also like this idea best. Or paint a stripe across the room. And add color in a rug.

  • I like the rug and stripe ideas. I also think you can stick with neutral or add color. Try adding some books to the bookshelf, too, that will help.
Can you switch crib & Dresser so that the crib & bedding patterns don't compete with the bookshelf?

For walls, if the current set up is the only option I think you can make it work, you just need to define each items space in the room. So instead if it being a row of furniture in the wall, either add something big centered over the two pieces, like an alphabet collage, monogram, or giant tree decal between the crib & dresser. Then something on a smaller scale by the tree, like the elephant decals. Not sure on space by the tree and the next wall to the left of the tree, but an elephant decal (it sounds like a theme you like) could wrap a corner, or use an exacto knife to make it look like an elephant is coming from behind the moulding if there is a doorway.

I think adding in elements proportionate to the three big pieces will help more than say, a row of 3 8x10 art prints on your main wall. Also thinks to bring your eyes up & down the wall since the heavy furniture is all at the waist/ below.

    Great start!! Loving the colors!!
