Diaper cream and nail trimming questions

Diaper Cream:  DD has one terrible rash due to being allergic to the soy formula she had been on for weeks (now allergic to milk and soy formulas...great).  Her little bum is so red and parts are raw and bleeding.  What diaper cream do you use?  And do you put the cream on the raw parts?  We've been using Desitin and Buttpaste but haven't seen much improvement over 24 hours.  It probably doesn't help that she poops every other hour though.  :(

Nail Trimming:  How do you trim your LO's nails?  Do you use clippers, files, bite them?  I have used nail clippers but recently cut her little thumb so I'm scared to do it again.  She has daggers for nails right now and cut the inside of her mouth chewing on her hands.

Feeling like MOTY right now...NOT.

TIA!  And sorry if there are spelling/grammar errors...typing while holding LO is challenging.

Re: Diaper cream and nail trimming questions

  • Balmex is my favorite and works for my girls although you may need something stronger at this point.

I've been trying to just file my little one's finger nails instead of clip them.

  • We use Baby Aquaphor for rashes/dry skin. What are you using to wipe your LO after BMs? I used baby wipes from the start but many people say that their LO's have reactions to them as some do contain alcohol.

I clip LO's nails w/ baby clippers when she's asleep.

  • I agree with pp, are you sure it's not a yeast infection? Also, balmex is my favorite and I wouldn't put it on open skin. I would stop using baby wipes until it clears up, just use water on a good paper towel. Let your baby's bottom get plenty of air. Be diligent at changing diapers and leaving it open to air for a few minutes after each diaper change. The only thing I'd use on the open skin is vaseline (something petroleum based to protect the skin from more breakdown). I use a file on LO's nails, they're too short for a clipper but too long to ignore.

  • Desitin works fine for my LO, but I've heard lots of good things about A&D, so maybe give that a try.  Agree with avoiding wipes for now - you can always use the spray nozzle in the sink for poopy butt.  Also try to let him be out in the open for as much as possible - put a waterproof something under him so if he poops it's no big deal. Yes put cream on raw parts.

I use clippers, but I hate to.  I try to do it while she's asleep but it doesn't always work out.  I clipped LO's skin last week and felt like the worst mother in the world.  It happens :/
  • Thank you, ladies.  We are sure it's a rash.  Doctor saw it yesterday, said to just use ordinary diaper rash cream...helpful, right?  We aren't using wipes right now.  We use a wash cloth and warm water.  And we are letting her get as much air as possible on her bottom.  And we're going through diapers like it's our job!  Thanks for all of your responses!

  • I would use Aquafor and A&D.

I use clippers. Most of the time I try trimming them while nursing because he isn't really moving as much. Sometimes I'll file them. I really hate baby nail trimming in general. :-\
  • Try Maalox for the diaper rash. Just blot it on with a cotton ball, let dry, and cover with triple paste.

  • While I was working in a daycare, the only cream that would work for some of the kids was triple paste.

Mh and I plan on biting them off. Grosses me out a bit but i'd rather that than cut  LO.

  • Purple desitin and triple paste. It'll take more than 24hrs to get better.

  • My LO is extremely sensitive to wipes, and possibly her diapers. We have been battling severe diaper rash off and on for the past 7 weeks! The past 2 weeks have been clear. When she had a bad rash, I did a mix of desitin and Lotromin. I put the Lotromin on first, then the desitin. You could even put a little hydrocortisone cream on her after the lotromin as well.  I only did the Lotromin twice a day, but the desitin at every change. Remember not to worry about wiping hard to get rid of the desitin - as long as the poop and pee are gone you are good to go.

I have a friend that swears by resinol - it is a burn cream that you can use for diaper rash.

We changed her wipes - started making  homemade ones and that has kept the rash away the longest. We also put organic coconut oil on her at every change to help prevent rashes.

For nails - I used to pull them off but now they are a bit thicker so I have been trimming them while she is nursing or sleeping

  • I would recommend trying an ointment rather than a paste.
DD had this problem also, some diarrhea too, and the zinc in the pastes only burned her bum and made it worse.
We started using desitin ointment, basically A&D ointment and since we have seen MAJOR improvement. No more rash. I use it at night still.
  • Not sure about the rash, but I file the nails when she sleeps. I'm afraid I'm going to cut her fingers with the clippers.

  • I highly recommend a&d treat. It's designed for diaper rash. My LO had a rash in one of his creases and it was gone in less then 24hrs. I applied it directly on the rash at every diaper change. I use a&d regular daily and have yet to have a rash anywhere else.
  • I use piyo baby scissors from amazon.com. One of the best purchases I made
  • butt paste but my mom swears by balmex. we got awesome safety first clippers that have really bright lights on the end of the clippers that really help! granted I still clip them when he is sleeping.
