How much does your baby sleep? Poll

So my baby is still only sleeping 2-3 hour stretches.  He is in bed by 7:30 does a dream feed around 10, and is up usually at 1:30, 3:30 and 5:30/6.  I am trying EASY but he wants to comfort suck before sleeping and looks at me like I am crazy when I try a pacifier.

I am beginning to feel like it is my fault and losing some steam.   Everyone keeps asking me shouldn't he be sleeping more by now?  I am like yeah, my baby didn't get the memo. Ugh.

So how long does your baby sleep?   Are you doing EASY, on demand, nursing to sleep or something else?

Just want to get a sense of how much of an outlier I am and also if there is pattern to the method for the better sleeping babies.  Thanks so much.

  • I put Connor down around 830. On a great night he'll sleep til 6. Most nights he'll sleep til 4, eat, then give me 2 more hours. On a bad night he'll get up at 1, 4, and 6. It depends on how he eats before bed.
  • It is not your fault.  All babes are different.
I start bedtime routine at 8 and then he is in bed no latter then 10-10:30.  I dont fight him to sleep I just cluster feed him and it seems to make him more sleepy and then by 10 he is usually out like a light.  He will then sleep for about 8-10 hours.  When he finally does wake up he is not fully awake so I will feed him in bed and then he will sleep for another 1-2 hours.  He does all of his sleeping during the night and early morning.  He will not nap during the day at all. But is fussy time isn't until about 7 so it works out.

  • its not your fault...every baby is different. my lo started sleeping through the night all by himself out of the blue. i know people whose baby was sleeping through the night from day 1. and others whose baby took forever to sleep for longer than 2-3 hours at a time.

  • 10pm until 5 or 530 most nights. Then eats and back down until 815 or so.  BF on demand.

His naps during the day are pretty random. Sometimes its 2.5 hours other times its a bunch of 30 minute naps.  He starts getting cranky for bed around 8 so we start our routine then. Change his onesie, no stimulation time with daddy (floor time just daddy). Swaddle by 9, sometimes he eats. Bouncy chair until 10ish. 3 oz bottle of pumped milk by DH at 10pm sometimes 930. Now if he BF from me at 9 or 915 we still do the 10pm bottle. Even if our day fluctuates and times, the bedtime bottle is a staple.

  • LM sleeps a ton but goes down late. I've tried to adjust it many times but cannot get it changed so I stopped trying. She goes down at midnight, sleep until 7 or 8 am. She feeds and is back down for a few more hours immediately after until 11am or noon. She takes a two hour nap midday at like 4pm. I've been really really lucky which is why I try not to kick a gift horse in the mouth by complaining about her timing...

  • Ds goes to sleep between 10:30 and 11:30. Most nights he doesn't wake up until 6:30 or 7 am. If he does wake for one feed its between 3:30 and 4:30 and he will go right back down. I'm still trying to figure out how to get him to bed earlier. I think I accomplished 10:30 for one night. Ds takes good naps during the day and little cat naps in the evening.

  • Both boys are in bed asleep by 8pm and we don't hear from them until around 7am. They did this on their own after we established a difference between sleeping and napping. They also eat very frequently during the day to get all their calories in order to sleep all night.

  • OP, I feel your pain. Tyler goes down around 9. Then wakes up around 11:30, then 1:30, then 3:30, 5 and is up for the day between 6:30 and 7. He is EBF, and feeds every time he wakes up at night (between 3-4 ounces each time), so I know he's hungry, but dear god - when will I get more than a 3 hour stretch of sleep?!? I'm exhausted, and he's 14 weeks old!!!

We tried dream feeding a few nights and she definitely got up more often. We stopped and she sleeps 6-8hrs a night and when she wakes for her snack feed (never even finishes one side) between 4 and 5 she falls asleep til about 7. When she wakes at 7 we are roughly on an EASY routine but follow her lead (she knows best). She's been good on it for around 6weeks (she's 13 today) with only a few days that she was completely off.
  • I'm going to respond based on what he did for the past 2 nights cuz that's what I want (he just finished a two week stint where he w a s up every 1-2 hours). We start bedtime routine around 8 and feed both a 3 oz bottle and breast. He falls asleep on the breast usually around 9. He sleeps until 1 goes back to bed and is up around 4. He goes back to sleep but will wake again at 6 but won't eat till 7.

  • I try the EASY method as much as I can with my LO but she still barely naps during the day and gets up at night, and some days she fights to fall asleep and it's a long 2 or 3 hour process because she's so overtired. But most nights I start her bed routine at 8:45. Bath, pajamas, swaddle, dim the lights, I rock and sing to her while she's feeding and she falls asleep. She wakes up like clockwork at 2am for a feeding and then again at 6 and sleeps until 9.
  • We start bedtime routine- bath, put in Halo Sleep sac, turn on fan for white noise, and then nurse (he'll typically fall asleep nursing)- at 7:00 and he is typically asleep by around 8:00.  If he wakes up once, it's around 4:00 if twice, it's around 2:00 and 5:00 and then finally up around 7:00.

  • Our baby girl goes to bed later (around 10 pm) and she sleeps about 8 hours through the night. She also naps after almost every bottle sometimes for 2 hours or longer. She's been this way since she was born and has always wanted to sleep a lot. I guess we are lucky because we didn't follow any kind of plan. I hope it lasts and it's not just a fluke.
  • Our LO goes to bed around 10/10:30 and is up for the day around 8/8:30. I am relieved to know that he is not the only one that does not nap during the day.

  • Our LO is usually in bed by 8 and sleeps till 1 or 2am to eat, them again between 3-5 am and up for good at 7. On a bad night he throws in a 10 pm feeding.

I just nurse on demand. He wakes up crying and I change him, feed him, hold him to avoid reflux and then back to sleep. Usually between 45 mins to an hr total.

I would skip the dream feed and see if it helps ( like pp suggested).

  • He's sleeping 10:30pm - 630/730/830ish. Depends on the night! I nurse him til he's asleep, then swaddle him and get him in his swing for the night. I've tried putting him down earlier (830p when his big brother goes to bed) but he's just not ready then.

PP mentioned establishing the difference between nap and bedtime... this is something we also did and it worked well for us. Naps are taken usually in her swing located in the TV room without being swaddled, just a blanket over. Bedtime in in her room, in her crib swaddled (although tonight we are going swaddle free, so far so good)!

Silvia is in bed between 6 and 8, then usually wakes up between 5 and 7 for a feeding then is back to sleep for a couple more hours.

I EP, and she is fed on demand. Some nights she falls asleep with a bottle... other nights she can still be awake when we put her down. Every night is a little different depending on her mood.

  • Have you tried giving the pacifier when she wakes up at 1 and leaving the room for 5 min to see if she falls back asleep? Our ped recommended this and it's worked for us. LO sleeps from 8-9 to 4-5 each night. Sometimes he wakes around 1 or 2 but I give him the pacifier and rub his tummy and he falls back asleep.

We also use Merlin's magic sleep suit which I really believe makes the long stretches possible. I highlu recommend giving it a try!

  • I agree with all the suggestions re: the dream feed.  We've never experimented with it and I have also heard from other people that it encourages them to wake more.

I don't have Owen on a strict schedule during the day.  I think Rachel Goldstein mentioned something similar to my thought process, I let him eat as much as he wants during the day and he's been getting enough calories that way to STTN since 10 weeks.  Even before he was sleeping in 11-12 hour stretches, he'd been sleeping from 9p-4a since 6 weeks.  The longer stretches have always coincided with big shifts in MY attitude.  At 6 weeks, moved his RNP to his own room.  I stopped waking at every little noise.  At 10 weeks, we went on vacation and had him in our room and my husband encouraged me to let him sleep when he started grunting around 5:00 a.m.  He wasn't hungry, just having a couple of awake minutes and went right back to sleep.

All that being said, every baby is different but I think for us the two things that have worked are on demand feedings during the day and me learning to let him put himself back to sleep.  I've read a bunch of books about sleep but I had to figure out what was going to work best for him.  Good luck!
