Update on bedrail safety with 18mth old

So what I feared happening, happened. LO flipped over the top of the bedrail and landed on the floor.

It happened while I was standing right next to her, and she was walking beside the bedrail, caught her foot in the bedding, lost her balance, put her hand out to catch herself on the bedrail, missed the rail and instead fell over the top of it.

It was always my fear that she would accidentally fall rather than attempt to climb over it, because it's that awkward height below her hip.

Anyway we've taken the bed rail off, and put her cot mattress on the floor below her bed (it's a low bed), so if she rolls off in her sleep, she'll get a fright but have a soft landing.

  • Oh no. Glad she is fine. You can roll up a blanket or beach towel and put it under the sheet as a bumper. That's what we do when we travel.

  • Yeah I'm glad she was fine too.

I'm not too worried about her walking on the bed without the rail, because she would never walk that close to the edge ordinarily. I think the rail gave her a false sense of security, but it would have been a very good rule to have while it was still up.

Oh well, I guess you live and learn.

  • My LO has fallen off the bed, it's terrifying but I think fairly common.  Don't beat yourself up on the woulda/coulda/shouldas. It's easy to look back and think how things could've been different if you just did x.

We found a floor bed was a great thing, LO loves to roughhouse in bed (jumps around, playing with stuffed animals, etc) and it is too hard on me constantly worrying he's going to throw himself off accidentally just being silly.
