Special Needs

Children's Museum anyone?

My work has offered to send me to a training where they have a Children's museum. I am planning to take DS and DH along but I am worried about the museum policies and how DS runs all over the place whenever we go some place new.

Have any of you been there? How to they cater to special needs especially autism?

TIA

  • Children's Museums can sometimes be overwhelming because there are so many people, but there's usually very little that's off-limits to kids. I always find that very refreshing.

  • We took my DS to Port Discovery in Baltimore a few weeks ago and he did really well. We made sure he had lots of snacks and some distractions in case things got overwhelming for him. We also scoped out quiet areas (i.e. mothers room, cafe, etc) online ahead of time so we knew where we could take him for some down time if necessary. He ended up not needing any of it and surprised us with how well he did. He even played nicely with the other kids. We did have a change of clothes since he can get overly excited in the water play areas (sensory seeker) and I was glad we did, he was soaked but happy. GL!

I've been to a couple here in NY and in VT and they've been pretty ok.  I mean they know their clientele and even NT kids can just have one of 'those' days and they're pretty equipped to handle kids running around and such.  What worried me for the most part was how Chris would interact with the other children or what would happen if a child tried to interact with him and he ignored them.  At one place, one child took it personal and shoved him to the floor.  Thankfully mommy came swooping in and gave her what for; apparently she'd been doing that to anyone who got in her way.  Good or bad, Chris didn't seem to notice what had happened.

But yeah, like others have said, I'd try if you can to go on a weekday or some 'off peak' hour.  Good luck!

Thank you all for your experiences with your children!

  • It really depends, for us there are 2 in our area.

1 moved & remodeled.  Before their move, DS LOVED it...very kid friendly and he loved to explore & learn.  However the new/remodeled location seems quite overwhelming to him, and we had a lot of meltdowns/transition difficulties.

1 is a science museum - we all love it.  There is a full water play area, an aquarium, etc.  Its super cool, but sadly very expensive so its rare that we can go.

  • Research a little ahead of time.  The one in our area has a section on their web site dealing with special needs and where to contact for more information.
We've been to the one in our area (Chicago area) and just went to the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia.  They are overwhelming and loud, but they are meant for kids to run everywhere!
