5 Thing Thursday

Here we go again

1) Has your house gotten messier since the arrival of your LO or do you and your wife still stay on top of the house cleaning?

2) Do you go to your State Fair?  Do you think that will change once LO is old enough to enjoy it?  At what age do you think they'd really start enjoying themselves there?

3-5 are you

Re: 5 Thing Thursday

  • 1) Has your house gotten messier since the arrival of your LO or do you and your wife still stay on top of the house cleaning?

My wife and I were hardly clean freaks before... we aren't dirty, but sometimes baskets of laundry don't get put away right away, or the mail may collect on the island.  Now, the family room (and kitchen since there is no dividing wall) look like Toys R Us threw up in it.  Being Jeffrey was the first grandchild on both sides, and obviously our first as well, he got toys... LOTS of toys.  It has gotten worse in the past few weeks because a number of the toys that got "retired" prior have come out from retirement for our youngest to play with so we now have toys ranging from 6 months to 3 years everywhere.  We clean the toys up, and try to get him to do it too, but they don't stay clean for long.  The rest of the house, other than the dining room table, isn't too bad.

    2) Do you go to your State Fair?  Do you think that will change once LO is old enough to enjoy it?  At what age do you think they'd really start enjoying themselves there?

Yes, we go to our State Fair almost every year.  As a kid I went for the rides and animals, then it changed for the food and the tradition.  Now, Jeffrey at 2 1/2 is really starting to enjoy it.  We just went to ours on Sunday and he had an absolute blast.  He pet baby cows, llamas, goats and baby pigs.  He ate his first corn dog and part of an elephant ear.  Then he got to ride the rides.  He went on his first little roller coaster... as someone who has ridden the Beast and Gemini, I would have put this little steel coaster up there as one of the roughest rides I've been on,  but he did well for the first half.  I would imagine he'd enjoy a smoother ride.  I think the turns were just too tight and the car too long.  He went down the big slide on the burlap sack with me but the he loved the cars and motorcycles that go around in a circle the most because he thought he was driving.

    3) My wife's best friend's baby shower is killing her.  I'm not the biggest fan of her (the best friend) in the first place (she basically asked me questions in rapid fire like a cop in a TV show when they try to break the person in our first meeting), so I'm really not thrilled with the situation.

    4) I'm ready to completely wash my hands of the baseball season and focus on football. To be honest, this is the least amount of baseball I've paid attention to in quite some time.  I knew the Cubs weren't going to be pushing for a playoff spot or anything, so it isn't like this season is a surprise, and I'm hearing some of the prospects could be ready by perhaps the All Star Break next year, but I'm ready for Colts football.

    5) I think Jeffrey has entered his full on terrible twos.  He doesn't want anything, doesn't like anything and the amount of meltdowns have increased.  I hope it is a short phase, but I hear 3 is worse than 2.

    5) Our son starts daycare on August 28 and I am dreading it.  I know my wife is too.  She was fortunate enough to be able to work from home for 5 months so that has been great but we are both nervous. How did everybody else deal with this? Any tips?

The nerves are expected.  You are leaving your child with what essentially boils down to complete strangers.  Call often, talk to the staff during pick up and drop off to build some faith and trust with them on your end.  In the end, it gives your little one an opportunity to gain socialization skills with kids their own age, so it benefits them... despite the fact that your child will likely get sick more frequently because of the exposure to other children... but that helps build their immune system.  If you are using a state accredited daycare facility versus a home daycare, they have a programs to help your child learn things.  Our oldest went to daycare for 1 day a week (still does) and somehow learned the sign language sign for "more" without us even knowing.  He now talks about his friends from daycare when not there.
  • 1.  Not applicable yet.  We accumulated a ton of baby paraphernalia from the shower and lot of that is piled in the basement.  We filled a cabinet in our kitchen with small plates and the Baby Bullet accessories.  I'll have to get back to you guys on this one when the baby arrives.

    2.  Our state fair is non-existent as of a few years ago.  The Michigan State Fairgrounds are located on 8 mile in Detroit.  Many years ago, before urban sprawl, it was probably a nice farmland area but as the city grew around it, the area really went downhill.  Over time less families attended until it wasn't economically viable to host the event.

I believe they have created a Great Lakes Fair held in the nearby city of Novi.  The former state fairgrounds are in development for commuter rail.

    3.  We had our 35 week appointment and ultrasound on Tuesday and found out the baby is sitting frank breech.  Needless to say this was a bit distressing because our doctor immediately started talking about scheduling a c-section.  We are using the spinning babies web site and she has an appointment with a chiropractor tomorrow to have them perform the Webster technique.  We are trying to remain positive and hope the little guy moves in the next couple weeks.

    4.  The Tigers are on a 12 win streak and swept the Indians last night.  Hell of a game...14 innings, and solid pitching on both sides.

    5.  Work sucks.  I need a beer.

  • Futant... the kid may very well move on his own.  You have 4-5 weeks likely for this to happen, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.  If it does come down to a c-section, it isn't your original plan, but the surgery is pretty much completely routine at this point to where the risks are extremely low.

I know.  I'm just assuming that everything will be fine and he will flip.  If I start to think anything else I go to a bad place.

The chiropractor adjustment has a good track record for assisting with the flip so I am remaining positive that everything will be fine and we'll have a normal labor and delivery.  I just hate how our doctor immediately went to "C-SECTION TIME!  Let's DO THIS!!"  Meanwhile I'm sitting there like...

  • 1) We keep the house pretty clean. Although I do spend most of the night looking for Finn Mcmissile. 2) We never go to the state fair. It's almost 3 hours away. But it should be noted that I WOULD drive that far for a funnel cake. 3) Today I'm very thankful for my dad who helped me with some shit around the house. I'm grateful to have such a good relationship with my parents. 4) Braves are killing it. Nice to see J Hey and the Uptons hitting the ball. I just hope everyone stays healthy for October. 5) I'm looking forward to some bro time with the guys on Sunday. We have our 3rd annual live fantasy football draft. I'm the 2 time defending champion. I still can't believe guys didn't want to have it at Hooters this year.

  • 1) LOL yes.
    2) Pretty much no one in California does.
    3) Chargers Pre-season ToNIIIIIIGht! Of course, the real starters only play what, one series in first pre-season games?
    4) In baseball I'm just happy to see the Yankees sucking it up
    5) Is it Friday yet?

-My son was born in April 2012. He pretty much rules.
  • 1) Our house has gotten messier then before him.  Most of the time it just takes an hour to get it back into shape.  MW and I both work full time so we let clutter go.

    2) We are about 2 hours from our State Fair and we went last year when he was one.  I am more likely to keep taking him to a County Fair that has the horse pulls for him to watch.  It is in the same town that my parents live in and they love watching the horse pulls.

    3) Got engineering sign-off rights on drawings since our Senior Engineer will be traveling about 3 times a year to India for 2 to 4 weeks at a time.

    4) Now my work load went from ridiculous to ludicrous where I really need to be spending roughly 12 hours of actually working to get close to even.

    5) MW and I have a goal of paying off all of our student loans within 4 years (if we don't have major home repairs to do) and our cars will be paid off in this same time frame so we can focus on fixing up our almost 100 year old home.

  • @jack19

We understand that circumstances arise in every L&D that cause you to change your birth plan.  At this point, I just want my wife to get to labor instead of scheduling a medical procedure that in the end, may not even be necessary.

  • We love our back pack, it's a LittleLife, Voyager 2.  My parents got it for me after talking with my sister who still hikes 20 plus miles a weekend when she can.  The maximum load is 44 lbs which hopefully will still work for my LO this fall for the hiking spree.  With him in this it makes it so nice to go on 2 or 3 mile hikes or like what we did last year when it was nice was do two 2 mile hikes with MW carrying him on one hike and me doing the other.
