Multiples

For those of you who have already delivered or are currently on bed rest/ hospital bed rest.

PPROMS, HELLP, IUGR, Dilation, Unexplained preterm labor, TTTS, Etc. What was the cause of early delivery for you and for those who had a c-section what was the reason they decided they needed to come out before the 37/38 week mark? For those on bed rest what was your reason as to why they put you on it? My OB seemed SSSOOO sure at my 20 week appointment yesterday I was not going to make it past November and he didn't explain why(even when I asked). I had contractions and preterm labor with my first around 34 weeks but he stayed in until 37 and 5 so im guessing he is anticipating something similar. At my ultrasound my cervix was great except when I would "push" it became slightly shorter than they liked and looked as if it was softening. So I can somewhat understand why but just wondering what the cause was for you ladies to have your twins when you did. I am hoping I make it to full term but he doesn't seem confident in that as he is thinking he will want me on bed rest in the very near future which I am not super thrilled about as I feel pretty great hip pain aside.

  • I went in to unexpected PTL at 28w1d and delivered at 29w4d after ten days of hospital bedrest. The only explanation ever given was that my body thought it was time since there was six pounds of baby in me. Five days before I went into labor my cervix measured perfectly and I had a negative FFN. I was told I wasn't on their "worry list". Things can just change so so quickly in a twin pregnancy!

  • I am at 26 weeks now and was admitted to hospital bedrest at 24 weeks. My cervix was always a concern and it started shortening and funneling, but has stayed high and tight. I also have regular non-painful contractions. Our next goal is to make it to 28 weeks, then 32, and 34. My doctors are watching me closely and we are not even considering discharging me before 28 weeks. I have been told that I will definitely be discharged at 34 weeks. The NICU neonatologist told me that every day my twins stay inside is two less days they spend in the NICU. Hospital bedrest is not fun, but you have to think of the longterm benefits. There are women on my floor who have been here for greater than 14 weeks and are doing well. It can and has been done.

  • I was on bed rest at 19 weeks for PTL, short cervix and funneling. I remained there until 35 weeks and scheduled a c section for 38 weeks. My water broke at 35w6d and we followed through with the c section because baby A was still breech. My doctor would not attempt a vaginal delivery unless baby A is head first.

  • I was placed on BR at 34w due to IUGR. I had been having consistent contractions from 31 weeks on, but (much to be surprise of my doctors) I wasn't dilating and all was well. My water broke at 36w1d and I delivered four hours later. They had no plans to deliver any earlier than my scheduled 37w c/s unless one of my BPPs/ Doppler flows/ AFI checks went poorly or if the boys dropped below the 6th percentile for weight.

  • I had fetal laser surgery for TTTS at 20w.  I was not put on bedrest though, but had massive lifting restrictions (nothing more than 10 lbs).  I was told to stay home and be lazy for at least a week after the durgery, but I could go back to my desk job after that.  About 26 weeks or so, i had a routine appt with my doctor and said I hadn't felt one of the babies moving much, so she sent me to L&D to be monitored.  While I was being monitored I had a huge number of contratcions (I was dehydrated).  It took them a few hours to get me hydrated enough and several doses of procardia to get them to stop.  But when they discharged me, my doctor ordered me to do bedrest.  So, PTL?  Didn't want to push it especially with the TTTS surgery?  Not sure exactly, but that's when I was kicked out of work.  I delivered at 35w6d due to pre-eclampsia.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • I was hospitalized at 30 weeks because Baby A's water ruptured.  Thankfully, it was just a slow leak and I made it to 33w3d before going into labor.  Had I not gone into labor on my own, I was scheduled to be induced at 34w1d.

  • I was taken off work for modified bed rest at 22 weeks when my twins were diagnosed with TTTS.  I was then admitted to the hospital until delivery for steroids and monitoring at 24 weeks because baby A, the TTTS donor was borderline IUGR and had poor umbilical blood flow.  In about a week we went from discussing them delivering me at 24 weeks to "let's try to get you as far along as we can with a scheduled c-section at 34 weeks if we get that far".  My MFM decided to deliver at 28w4d when baby A's blood flow was in reverse, he hadn't grown enough, and was starting to show early signs of distress.  I had a c-section but fortunately never had issues with cervical shortening or PTL.  The effectiveness of bed rest for PTL with twins is debatable among some medical professionals.  Are you on progesterone for your history of PTL?  I know this is commonly prescribed to women who have experienced PTL with previous pregnancies.
  • I was put on bed rest at 26 weeks for a shortened cervix with funneling, measuring 0.98cm. 4 days prior my cervix was measuring between 2.5-3.8. During my first pregnancy, with DS, I had a similar issue. At 26 weeks, with my first, fundal height was measuring ahead so I was sent to ultrasound. Nothing to explain measuring big but my cervix was short and funneling, about 1.7cm. He was born just a couple hours after his due date. My 2nd pregnancy was uneventful and she was born hours after her due date. I'm hoping these twin boys follow suit and don't come too early.

  • I started having protein in my urine and borderline BPs at 24w. Bloodwork came back normal and BP stabilized, so I went along as normal. Symptoms flared again at 32w and I was admitted to the hospital for a weekend for observation. Official dx of mild pre e followed. Everything again stabilized and I was released but monitored closely. No bed rest.

My water broke completely unexpectedly at 34w. Baby A's cord prolapsed, so I had an emergency c/s under general anesthesia.

I have a 3yo DS that was born at 37w1d bc my water broke.

  • I delivered my twins via emergency c-section at 36 weeks 4 days due to HELLP. I worked the morning that I had them.
  • I delivered my girls at 34w4d via c/s due to Pre-E with HELLP Syndrome (heard IUGR thrown around too). Doctors and Nurses didn't tell me much. 3 days before my OB was telling me that we might be delivering at 35 weeks because the twins weren't growing like he'd like but we would reassess in a week. My OB apt was Thurs, Sunday I went in for a NST, ended up sending me for a BPP and did urine sample and bloodwork. BPP results came back that Baby A wasn't thriving anymore so out they came.

  • HELLP and pre e are what did me in at 36 weeks. Hopefully you'll prove him wrong! Gl.

  • Thanks everyone :) I am just trying to get a feel for things as to how they can go from OK to worse and it seems like it can happen very fast in some if not most cases. Not on any progesterone for my history of PTL but if my cervix continues to soften bed rest will happen :(

  • At 34 weeks and 2 days my water spontaneously broke on Twin A.  I was devastated because my pregnancy had been completely complication free and I was convinced I'd make it to 37/38 weeks.  No explanation given as to why this happened so early.

  • At 20 weeks my cervix was over 4 CM and did not budge when they pushed on my abdomen.  At 23 weeks I noticed my stomach getting firm.  Another twin mom mentioned that she thought it was harmless when she had the same symptoms until she went to the doc and was put on bedrest for shortened cervix,  I made an appointment with my doc the next day and she reluctantly agreed to a cervical check after telling me she thought everything was normal - the ultrasound revealed I had progressed to a 1.1 length with funneling.  A few days later I was down to 0.9 and was checked into the hospital.  I had bathroom privileges for about 3 days until my cervix was checked again and had no measureable length.  I was told every day for the next 2 weeks that I would deliver within a day or two.  I put myself in the trendelenburg position and made it a full 6.5 weeks to deliver the girls at 30+3.  This was actually a relief since one of the girls had essentially stopped growing and was measuring below the 2nd percentile.  The smaller baby's (B) water broke and Baby A was breech so I was rushed into an emergency C-section.

The doctors are still unsure if the Braxton hicks were causing the cervical shortening or if it was just cervical incompetence from the weight of the twins.  I would never have gotten checked if it wasn't for my friend mentioning her own bedrest and my intuition telling me something might be wrong.  I'm sure I was a fairly rare case and I don't mean to cause any alarm, but this has definitely been a learning experience in trusting my own body.  The girls will be 6 weeks tomorrow and they are doing fantastic - they are just working on growing bigger and will be going home in a few weeks.

  • Baby A's water broke at 34w6d. It was my last day of bed rest! She was breech, so I had a c-section. I was on modified bed rest from 28 weeks due to preterm contractions and a shortened cervix. The babies were feeder/growers in the NICU and are now doing great!

  • seems like 34 weeks seems to be pretty steady for delivery across the board for various reasons. Thanks ladies for all your responses. Yesterday I found out I am having some shortening of my cervix and BH are changing my cervix so modified bed rest for me.....go figure a day after I ask this question haha!
