crawling stairs

DD has yet to figure out how to crawl up stairs.  We've got one step down from our kitchen into the family room, and when I'm in the kitchen or at the table, she'll crawl over to the step and she tries, but she just can't seem to get up it.

anyone else's LO having difficulty with stairs?  how did you help them learn how to do it?

Re: crawling stairs

  • I think it will come.  My LO has crawled up all our stairs.  Obviously we still have not had time to get enough gates yet!  He does not know to crawl down, unless it's one step.

  • Elijah is a stair climbing machine. I did nothing to to teach him how to do it. Just one day I looked over and he had gone up two stairs and was headed for the third. I can't put up gates where we are living so I have to keep a very close eye on him. I follow behind him whenever he goes up the stairs.
  • DD has little interest in our staircase, but can go up them. She will go up a few, with me right behind her, but then stop. I will turn her around an put her on her bum and help her scoot down them. I feel like if for some reason she is on the stairs by herself, she needs to know how to get down them.

Maybe put a favorite toy on the upper part?

  • She will get it.  DS had a problem at my parents house, they have one step up to the kitchen... Now he loves to climb steps, he goes over to our steps and looks at us, climbs up one, looks back and giggles.  We are getting a gate this weekend!   And he thinks it is funny when we say NO

Is this because you rent, or some other reason?  I would look into other options to block off the space.  K is SO fast, I am sure Elijah is too...I wouldn't count on just 'keeping a close eye on him'.
pressure mount gates, at least for the bottom of the stairs are great!

  • I let DS practice climbing stairs at an open play place - they have the soft foam stairs for practice.  It helps DS build his upper body strength, and learn to pull his knees/legs up.  I also help him practice at home if I'm in the mood.

About 1 week after he started doing the stairs, he was able to pull himself up to kneel/stand position.

The stairs are all gated off, so DS cannot get to them unless he's supervised by me.

We are temporarily living with my parents. I have gates but my dad won't let me put them up because it makes it harder for him to access the stairs.
I will put them up when we move into our new place.
  • We don't have stairs and dd can do it. Give her a minute... She will figure it out. Might I suggest putting pillows on the floor that she has to go over . Dd1 does this to dd2 all damn day.

  • uh, I *just* caught DD chasing the cat, she had already made it up like 6 steps.  Her giggling clued me in that she was doing something sneaky.  Guess we should get a gate....moty here, esp cause I read this thread earlier today!
