Running advice?

Hi all. I'm 3-4 weeks pregnant with my 1st baby (just took the test and found out this week!) and my running routine is a few miles 3 times/week. What kind of advice did you get from your MDs about exercise? Does anyone know if I need to find out if things are going well at the first visit in a few weeks, or can I continue on my runs? Thanks!

Re: Running advice?

  • As long as you have a normal, healthy pregnancy, you can keep doing your exercise routine. If you need to slow down or cut mileage, do so. Listen to you body. I'm 36 weeks, still running 4 miles 5 x per week. I normally run 40 miles per week, so as I progressed in my pregnancy, I cut back a lot.

  • You should be able to continue your workouts regularly unless the doctor suggests otherwise as a result of concerns. I had a harder time in the first trimester getting in really good workouts because of my fatigue, but at 36 weeks I'm still running or in the gym lifting 6-7 days a week. Staying active has made this experience far better than I could have ever anticipated. Be safe and listen to your body. Your workouts will change as you go through the pregnancy, but there's no need to change it unless there is a reason (it hurts, you're feeling ill, you're high risk, etc.). Congrats and good luck!

  • The only concern my midwife has about running is tripping after the first trimester. :) She says if it feels good, I can keep doing what I've always been doing. I've slowed down quite a bit but still like to get out there.
