Adoption

considering adoption, but worried about our situation

My husband and I have been TTC for a couple of years now with no luck. Over those years we have considered adoption, but now I'm pretty sure we will be going the adoption route. I know we want domestic and are open to an older child up to age 9 or 10...from the state or private agency. We are both 32. My husband works, but I am on disability for bipolar disorder. That is a major worry of mine, that we would not be allowed to adopt because of my disability. My doctors are more than willing to write letters stating that I would be a good candidate as long as I follow treatment and that I am medicated. I have never had a problem with that. I went off of most of my meds, with help of my psychiatrist while TTC, but I'm now back on full dosages of all medications. I have always been compliant.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Even if you haven't been in this situation do you have any information that could help? Are we wasting our time thinking about this?

  • I used to do homestudies for foster care and audit homestudes for domestic adoption.  As long as you are stable and compliant with your medications you should be fine.  The agency may want a statement from your doctor/therapist.  International adoption would most likely be off limits to you.  Some other countries have more of a stigma associated with mental illness than we do.

  • That is great to hear! We weren't too interested in International adoption so that's not much of an issue. I have no problem having my doctor write a statement and the last time I talked to them they didn't have a problem with it either. I think that I had read somewhere that they can't discriminate based on being on disability, but I wasn't sure if the bipolar disorder would be an issue.

  • The only thing I can think of is that there is a requirement (here, anyway) that Foster parents cannot be on any kind of public assistance, so I'm not sure how they would consider disability payments or whether that would be an issue for a straight adoption through the state. I'd think that would be treated separately, but I don't know. I imagine that a social worker will Want to explore it to make
sure you can parent well and what your support system is like. If you are doing well (and have been for a good while) and have the support of your caretakers, I'd imagine that domestic adoption would be possible.
***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.
  • I had an unmarried foster parent on SSI.  As long as she could meet all of her bills without the foster care payments she was approved.
