Parenting after a Loss

Our first ear infection :(

Yesterday the pediatrician diagnosed A with a moderate ear infection in his right ear :(  He had developed his first cold earlier in the week and we were there to have that checked out before we leave for vacation on Saturday.  I was completely surprised to learn of the ear infection- he hasn't had a fever or been fussy.  Poor little guy.

Any advice on how to get him to take the antibiotic?  Last night and this morning I'd say half to three quarters he spit out.

  • I'm so sorry your little guy's not feeling well.  We also use the syringe and just a little bit at a time.  I also heard somebody once say to give a quick little blow of air in the face, and it makes them swallow.  I tried this once for tylenol and sure enough, she blinked a couple times and swallowed.  Good luck, and I hope you have a great vacation and your little man starts feeling better soon.

  • Poor guy :( Are you putting the syringe way back in his mouth? And keep him at an angle til he swallows. If he takes a bottle, give a bit immediately after to help with swallowing. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I have been trying to direct the syringe into the back corner of his mouth (like we do with Tylenol) but it still ends up coming out. I think I may try it when he is semi-reclined in the bouncer. So far we have tried laying flat and standing up. I also tried blowing in his face, but he just looked very confused...then dribbled the medicine out . I may stop at BRU on the way home and look into the medicine/pacifier thing. I hadn't heard if them. And even though he is breastfed, I may put a half oz or so into a bottle for a chaser- thanks for that suggestion.

Another question, how do you handle dosing if you know he didn't get all the medicine? I will call the pedi, but just curious as to your experiences.

  • I second the mik chaser, we haven't ever done antibiotics, but can it be mixed with milk? We do this for her vitamins.
