Am I wrong?

Am I wrong for being grossed out that when my mom and brother visited that they didn't bring their own soap and shampoo and used ours. We always bring our own soap when we visit someone's house.

  • I provide my guests with their own. I usually assume people don't have the space for that kind of stuff when they visit. DH used to travel all the time for work and would bring back the small bottles of shampoo and soap from the hotels, so I have a bunch of those on hand. I don't see it as gross or rude that they borrowed yours though. Like @mbm1983 said, it's not like they're licking or peeing on it. Although... Do you use bar soap? Is that why you think it's gross to share?

No, I guess my family doesn't use bars, haha...normally it's like body wash stuff and I'll just use my hand instead of a washcloth.

I was typing my response and hadn't seen this before I posted. Did they use wash cloths with bar soap or just the soap? We don't use bar soap, but I don't see how it would be a problem if they were given wash cloths.

  • I don't used bar soap, so I guess that's a little weird to share. But body wash and shampoo, no second thought. When visiting my parents I never bring my own stuff. I'm a mooch like that! Bye @petunia844!!! We'll miss you!!
Byyeeee!! I really do miss you guys, but I just don't have the will power to be a semi-regular poster. Haha.

  • Yes. It's weird to be grossed out by your immediate family using shampoo and soap at your house.
  • Umm... guess I'm the minority here... if it was a friend or extended relative maybe, but if I visit my siblings or parents I use their stuff.  I think it depends on your family though I guess.
This. Since my family has to fly on a plane to visit me, my sister usually only tries to being a carry on and so she doesn't have to deal with the little baggies and stuff for liquids, she just borrows mine and I do the same when I visit her. Plus, my sister uses the expensive stuff so I like to try it out!!

  • I always provide for visitors.  Shampoo wouldn't bother me, but I wouldn't use a bar of soap that someone else used.  I'd probably be ok if my sister or mother or father used it, but would be grossed out if MIL or FIL or BIL used it.

We always keep small travel soaps (like from hotels) in the guest bathroom  so we can just throw the bar out after they leave.  I've done it with full bars if we didn't have any travel soaps, but I just feel like it's such a waste of money. I know lots of folk who do that, or provide liquid soaps for visitors.  To go into someone else's shower and just use their bar of soap - that's kind of intrusive and I'd never do it.  I also don't like when people use my shower - we have a guest room with a guest bathroom for that reason.

  • This sort of thing doesn't bother me at all.  But I would never expect that my family (or really anybody, actually) bring their own toiletries (save for a toothbrush) when visiting my house.
