Anxiety in children

We took J to the developmental pediatrician today. We know he is a very anxious child, but thought hat he might also be experiencing some processing issues. Turns out the doctor thinks all his difficulties stem from his high anxiety. He wants us to see a treating psychiatrist for diagnosis and a treatment plan. Anyone have experience with this? Have you medicated your child for anxiety? Can you give me an idea of how the meds/treatment impacted your child?

Re: Anxiety in children

  • J has some symptoms for ASD, but none of the social ones, so at this point, they are thinking it's strictly an anxiety issue.  The doctor said that if the psychiatrist doesn't agree or if other symptoms emerge, he would then consider having him evaluated for an ASD.

How old was your son when you started the medication, and did you start at the same time as the therapy?  J is just turning 7.

  • I wanted to see what benefit we could get with Floortime, CBT and behavior mods before adding meds.

This is pretty much were I am now. The meds potential side effects really scare me.

To be honest, we've only seen the developmental pediatrician, but he wants us to see a psychoatrist for a treatment plan and prepared us for the idea that it may very well include meds. So, at this point, we haven't specifically discussed any, but I'm aware that some may contain black box warnings about depression and suicidal thoughts in children, so I'm a bit freaked out. I realize I'm putting the cart before the horse, but I like to be as aware as possible, so I can ask as many questions as necessary if the the psychiatrist does suggest meds right away.
