Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

18 month old throwing fits every evening.

Anyone else deal with anything like this? DH drops DD off at daycare in the morning and I pick her up in the evening.  Everyday when I get there she runs to me and seems happy to see me.  She's smiling, laughing and having a good time with everyone there as we discuss her day.  Then we go home.  She's fine in the car, but practically the minute we walk in the door she starts whining and screaming for absolutely no reason.  I have tried ignoring, redirecting, playing with her toys, reading, cuddling, singing, Disney Junior but the only way to get her to stop screaming is to give her the pacifier and blanket.  Once I do that she'll lay on me calmly but that's it. She won't play or anything.  Fast forward to when DH gets home (usually about an hour and a half after we get home and a half hour after I get her calmed down) and he walks in the door and she pops up and is instantly smiling and happy and gets down to play and run around and gives up the pacifier.  This has been going on for two weeks now every single week day.  I'm starting to feel like she really doesn't want anything to do with me.  I know that's ridiculous, but it's hard not to feel that way when you're screamed at every night.  DH and I got into a huge fight last night because it's affecting my mood and he doesn't get it. She NEVER does this to him when it's just the two of them.

Anyone else dealing with anything like this?

Re: 18 month old throwing fits every evening.

  • We went through a "daddy phase" with my son.  Some kids go through a phase of seperation anxiety around this age- but I think kids that don't go through that phase will go through a phase where they seemingly NEED one parent or the other.  It will pass for you too, I'm sure!  Good luck!

  • Could she be hungry? Maybe try a snack in the car or right when you get home.
  • Thanks for the responses.  I offer snacks and she just cries and says no.  I guess I'll just give her the pacifier and blanket and let her decompress for a bit.  It's just so strange as she has never done this before.  It started out of the blue a couple of weeks ago.
