Dropping pumps and keeping supply

An EPs out there have any advice on the best way to drop pumps while keeping your supply up. I currently pump 5-6 times per day and would like to only pump 3x.

What is your advice and how long did it take you to get to the number of pumps you wanted?

  • No advice, but you might want to post this on the BF board.  I'm also curious :)

I can't answer your exact question because when I dropped pumps, I did lose some supply. HOWEVER...I was able to regain some supply by eating porridge every morning (with brown sugar and blueberries - yum!)

I was able to go from about 10 or 12 ounces per day to 15 or 18 ounces.

  • I'm EPing (about 32-35 oz a day) and pump 4 times. I'm trying to work my way down to 3.

I started pumping every 2-3 hours, but (as you know) that just ruins your life, so I slowly increased the time in between each pump. My LO STTN, and I don't wake up to pump. Thankfully H feeds her in the morning while I pump, otherwise this wouldn't be possible.

To lower my ppd, I kept track of when I finished pumping (when my breasts were "empty") and then waited a full 3 hours to pump for a week. The next week I waited a full 4 hours to start pumping. The last 2 weeks I've been doing a full 5 hours because I feel like I'm at a critical point where I need to really work on maintaining my supply. I did see a slight increase in production up to this point. I just have a feeling this is the tipping point.

I will probably finish out this week pumping every 5 hours, and then next week go to 6. My goal is to put 8 hours in between- that would work perfectly for our schedule but I don't know if it's possible.

Once I finish with the double electric (usually pump for about 30-40 minutes to get 8 oz total), I hand express for a bit to really clear out the milk. I pump when I first get up around 7:00, and then sometime between 1:00 and 2:00, again between 6:00 and 8:00 and then right before bed around 11:30 or midnight.

You're my hero. 30-40 minutes PLUS hand pumping? Pretty sure that if I did that more than once, I'd go to put my milk away and discover that my nipples had ripped off.
