30 min naps

Hi ladies! DS will be 15 weeks tomorrow and has never been a stellar napper. This whole week he's only been doing 30 min naps, even if I wear him. He does sleep well at night (last night was 10-5) but he gets so cranky during the day because his naps just aren't cutting it. Tips? Anyone in the same boat? Does it have to do with 4 mo wakeful period?

Re: 30 min naps

  • Ava was like this and Mila is following the same pattern. Honestly, even after sleep training Ava never napped longer than 30 minutes until she was over a year old. However, she was always a good night sleeper. Some kids just aren't nappers. As she got older, I did insist on "quiet time" in addition to her 30 minute nap so she'd be in her room for an hour. Eventually that led to longer naps. But at this age, there's really nothing to be done. Hang in there!

  • My guy did this for a week or two and is napping now 1.5 -2 hrs 2x a day, then sleeping at night for 12hrs (up every 1.5-2 hrs to feed)

  • We are in the same boat over here. The only way DS gets a decent nap if he sleeps on me with my boob in his mouth. I have resorted to doing this once a day in the afternoon if he is way too fussy because he needs some sleep! It's frustrating not being able to get anything done, but hopefully his napping will improve on. He STTN, sometimes 11 hours, so I can't really complain too much.

  • We're there! Some days, even if M is completely zonked, he'll go down for a nap and his eyes pop open at thirsty minutes. The last few days his naps have been better...nighttime has been a nightmare. He wakes up every single hour. Ugh...I'm not trying t figure it out anymore, just survive. Lol

  • Ugh....I am so jealous reading about all or your LOs who sleep well st night. We are up every 2 hrs the last 3 wks....sometimes even shorter than that. I go back to work non the 20th and am not looking forward to it. I'm going to be dead on my feet.
  • is his whole night sleep 10-5? maybe he's napping poorly b/c he's not getting enough sleep at night? my four-month-old sleeps anywhere from 11-14 hours with one wakeup to eat. i'm a big fan of healthy sleep habits, happy child, so i'd try putting him down for his first nap around 60-90 min after he wakes up in the morning for his first nap (awake after some soothing), and then get him down within 2 hours for his subsequent naps.

that said, my older son always slept great at night (12-14 hours without waking up), but never slept more than 45 min for a nap until he moved to one nap at 13.5 months. i was pulling my hair out for awhile, but finally accepted that some kids are just short nappers. maybe i did something wrong and didn't realize it but he's a well rested happy 20-month-old now, so who knows.
