Sleeping on your stomach

So I asked my ob during my first pregnancy if it was ok to sleep on my stomach. He said I could do it till I am uncomfortable. I'm 15 weeks & still able to do it & I was just wondering if anyone else does? I sorta sleep with one leg up so the pressure isn't on my stomach but more my leg. I've seen a lot of post of people starting to use a pregnancy pillow so I was just curious. Thanks :-)

Re: Sleeping on your stomach

  • I am 18 weeks, and still kind of on my stomach. It's definitely getting less comfortable.

When I was 8 months pregnant with DS2 (and I was HUGE) I would wake up in pain from trying to roll onto my stomach. My sleeping mind thought I wasn't pregnant, and was ignoring this huge baby sticking out

I am also a stomach sleeper, but had to transition to sleeping on my side fairly early (6 weeks), because my boobs were too tender to sleep on my stomach :(

  • I still sleep on my stomach (16w6d if you can't see siggy).  I've recently started moreso sleeping on my hip with my leg up to keep pressure off, but I am still sleeping on my stomach and my back, and planning to until it's uncomfortable.

  • I'm 18 weeks and still sleep on my stomach. I modified it with pillows and propping a leg up until 30 weeks last time but I was 19 and teeny tiny.

I'm already starting to modify. I sleep sort of on a feather pillow that takes the pressure off the front of my stomach. It's not that I am uncomfortable it's just that if I'm on my stomach, I will feel LO and want to stay up to feel more! The way I lay on the pillow, it kind of looks like I am try to have sex with it. DH gets a kick out of seeing me. :P

I do the exact same thing with my leg. Some nights I get up to pee so many times that I find it hard to fall back asleep and I end up tossing and turning. That's the only position that feels comfortable to me.

That's what happens to me too! I'll try and sleep in a different position but can only fall asleep on my stomach.

    Thanks for sharing girls!

  • I still sleep on my stomach, totally unmodified - and I'm 19w1d. I asked my OB last appt and she said there is no risk of harming the baby by sleeping on the stomach, it will just eventually become too uncomfortable to do so - and that's when I shouldn't anymore. Hope that helps! I sure know its going to be very difficult to sleep once I can't anymore!
  • I slept on my stomach the majority of my pregnancy with DD at least somewhat. Even if I started on my side I would wind up on my stomach...so as long as it doesn't hurt I think you're fine!

  • Another modified stomach sleeper here. While not pregnant, I do the hip propped up thing. I think I'll be able to continue to do this for a while. I've started putting a pillow under there in the space between my inner thigh and abdomen, just to make it more cushy.
  • I sleep the same way with my one leg out to the side. I have a pillow that I've been putting under my leg. But I can lay on the couch on my stomach with no issues.

  • I'm 18wks 3 days and will occasionally sleep on my stomach. My bump isn't huge but even so it hasn't really been very comfy. I prefer my side with a pillow in between my legs.

  • I love that 99% of the ladies in this thread are sleeping the same exact way. I'm a modified tummy sleeper also.

  • I still sleep on my stomach, your body will tell you when a position isn't comfortable.

  • I definitely still sleep on my stomach. It's way more comfortable than any other position.  I do sometimes sleep halfway on my side and half on stomach-- with the pillow making it the partial side (does that make sense?)  Back sleeping is officially uncomfortable and my shoulders get crunched too much if I'm actually on my side. I think I'll be investing in a great body pillow once this bump grows more so I can keep sleeping soundly.

  • I miss sleeping on my stomach...
Sometimes in the middle of the night I get myself in pain because I turned... but I was able to sleep on my stomach until 15 weeks...
DH goes with me to all doctors appointments, and sure enough, right on the first time we saw my obgyn he asked if I could keep sleeping on my stomach. He said yes, until it bothers me.
    It bothers me already =(

  • I do it, but mostly modified with my H acting as my pregnancy pillow. He's not as cushy.

  • I sleep the same way you do.

  • I still do it. I'm 16 weeks but definitely bumping out since this is my second. When I do it on a harder surface like the floor, baby protests by moving. I really love sleeping on my tummy and I fight tooth and nail til the last possible day before I give it up.

  • I'm stomach sleeper as well but been having trying to sleep on my side to prep for when I can no longer sleep on my stomach.
  • I still do mostly, but when I initially turn onto my stomach, it feels as though my stomach muscles are tearing apart from the stretching, so I've started laying on a down pillow to make it more comfortable. I'm a FTM and only 16 weeks along and barely showing, but it feels as though my stomach is incredibly tight, almost like a balloon.
  • I've been using a pregnancy pillow and trying to sleep on my left side, although its impossible and I always wake up on my back. I was always one to sleep on my stomach, so it has definitly been an adjustment.

  • 19 weeks and still sleep (and read) on my stomach. I just follow the "if its not comfortable, don't do it" theory. I move a lot in my sleep, rotating to different positions. It's almost time to bust out the body pillow, but I'm trying to wait as long as possible since DH hates it.

  • Who knew there were so many fellow stomach sleepers?!
  • I do the exact same thing. I'm at 18 weeks. The leg up helps with the stomach pressure.

  • I'll be 18 weeks on Saturday -- and put me down for modified stomach sleeper too!  I actually put pillows under my hips to make an upside now V for my belly to have a place to go...and have found it super comfy!

  • It's uncomfortable for me now so I don't do it. But before if I propped one leg up that took enough pressure off.

  • There was a women on BOTB when I first joined (2007?) that talked about how she still stomach slept at over 35 weeks (or somewhere in that range).  She propped her whole body up on pillows and made a hole for her belly to go in.  It was the only way she could sleep so she did what she had to do.

  • If you actually put a pillow under your propped up leg also it takes the pressure of the stomach even more.  lol...I feel like ive tried it all.
