4 AM Wakeups

For those that have done sleep training have you done it to try to push back LOs wake up time? We do not generally have difficulty getting LO to go to sleep at night but she wakes up everyday between 4:00 and 4:45. Don't get me wrong, I know it could be worse. But, she seems to have her alarm set for this time which is tough because we wake up at either 5 or 5:30 so whoever gets up with her doesn't really have time to go back to sleep. She is definitely hungry so I'm not sure what if anything we can do to get her to wait for her first bottle a little longer. But, getting her to sleep an extra 45 min to an hour would mean so much to her exhausted mommy and daddy. We are now decreasing her bottles to 3 oz instead of 5 and she is getting a bit angry when she realizes the bottle is empty but she does go back to sleep until a little after 6. We try to have her in bed by 7:00 or 7:30 which is generally the latest she can handle, but on the few times she has slept later she still wakes up around the same time.

  • I read a book- I'll have to look for the title- where the author sets out a plan to eliminate night feedings. The first night give her one ounce less than what she would normally drink, and add that once to a bottle during the day. Over a course of a week, decrease one ounce every day or two from the night feeding, adding it to a day feeding, until you are down to 2 ounces at night. Then, just eliminate the feeding and comfort her until she falls back asleep. After you eliminate the night feeding like this, the author says that you can sleep train. I have not tried this yet, but it makes so much sense to me. I'll look for the title of the book and post it here. Goodluck!

  • That does make sense, PP! My suggestion was to feed her more during the day. With DS, he has a 6 oz bottle between 5 and 6, dinner (puréed) at 7, then another 6 ounce bottle around 8 before he goes to sleep. We started doing it that when we sleep trained to try and eliminate his night time feeding and it's worked like a charm! Unless he's super tired and goes to bed without his last bottle, he sleeps until 6 or 6:30 most mornings.
  • The book is "Sleeping Through The Night" by Jodi A. Mindell.  There is a lot of stuff that is way too time consuming to do in the book, but I thought that the middle of the night bottle weaning would work.

@jwebb0512 - I wish DD would eat  like your DS!

  • Haha...Hudson eats anything that won't eat him first. At 7 months, he's 21 lbs and 29 inches, so he's a big guy all the way around. He's outgrown most of his 9 month onesies and footed pajamas because he's too long. I joke there should be a big and tall store for babies. :D
  • Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully something will work.
