At what age did your LO start enjoying tummy time? DD is 10 weeks old & she loves laying on her back on a blanket, but when I try to turn her over for some tummy time, she starts fussing.
I took my DS to his 2wk appt yesterday and the pediatrician said I could start tummy time 3-4 times a day for just about 5 minutes each time. She said a flat surface is best but my DS likes to do tummy time on me and his boppy the most so I will do that until he's older/stronger.
Whether she fusses or not, do it anyways. It's super important.
I never did tummy time with DS 1. I just carried him in a wrap most of the day and if he would tolerate it lay him on my chest. Occasionally he would let me lay him across my lap while he sucked on my finger but that was like once a week. He was a barnacle and if he wasn't latched onto my breast he was a screaming madman. Especially for the first 3 months of his life. He had incredible head control and was sitting independantly at 4mo.
I don't think tummy time is the end of the world if you don't do it. Just find other ways to help their neck strength and prevent a flat head.
I agree with this 100%. My son hates tummy time unless he is on a boppy but then he just tries to climb over it and ends up on his nose. He is 3 months old and is already able to sit up assisted and has awesome head and neck control.
But we don't just let him lay around we either carry him around, he is in his jumper toy, or we have him in his pack carrying him. No problems with flat spots either.
Flame me if you want to but he hates being on his back, we fought it for almost 2 months trying everything swaddling, not swaddling, rocking him till he was completely out and a limp noodle, but he would never sleep very long. then one day I started putting him on his tummy for naps. He slept so good... He has been sleeping on his tummy for well over a month and doing wonderful. He is still sleeping in our room.
Our daughter and my older son hated being on their back as well. When my son was a baby though it was side sleeping (he is 23 years old).
My suggestion is to do what works for you and your baby. Just play around and see what your LO likes.... tummy time on you, the boppy, not at all but use other ways to strengthen the neck and back....
I think tummy time is pretty important. My husband works in physical therapy and sees lots of adolescents now a days with pretty weak upper body strength. They think some of this has to do with not enough tummy time and physical play while developing. My doc said not to worry about it too much until about 2 mo. LO is in PT now for torticollis and they told us tummy time is super important for him and to try it even for just 30 sec every hour if needed. We do it for about 15-30 at a time 4-5 times a day.
My youngest is 11 weeks. He sometimes tolerates tummy time, but I wouldn't say he enjoys it. He has mild plagiocephaly and torticollis, so we have to give him tummy time as much as possible. We also hold him up in a standing position and recently brought out the Bumbo. He is getting better with tummy time, just keep at it.
At about 8 weeks my LO was able to tolerate it for longer than 2 minutes. I feel like he does better when I'm laying on the floor with my face in front of his, cheering him on.
M actually has started liking it as of maybe 2 weeks ago. She is 7 weeks now. She can lift her head to 90 degrees and hold it for 5-10 minutes so I think that has been the difference- she now actually likes being able to see things. I alway make sure to put her arms in a good position so she can push up well, too, and that seems to help. I probably only do twice a day on average but the duration is at least 5 minutes. I also have her on my stomach for a couple hours every morning so I figure that should count as well.
DD is 7 weeks and she still can't stand it. She tolerates it for literally 2 minutes and then starts screaming. Any idea how long we should be keeping them on their stomach? I honestly don't let her go past 15 minutes because she's obviously so frustrated by it.

I started tummy time his first week home...he is 7 weeks now. He varies between 10-40 minutes. I do tummy time right after he eats and his diaper is changed. Then its down for a nap (for both of us)! I put down a blanket on the floor and show him toys, read a book, and sing to him. Its great fun...its my favorite part of the day.
Ugh tummy time is the worst part of the day. DS is 8 weeks and hates it with a passion. It sounds like we're murdering him. He's completely fine on us. He can get up on his forearms, hold his head up and will try to roll. On his mats he hates it. Arms straight out on the sides, head on ground. He won't even try to do anything, just screams to the point of being sick. On a boppie or us he's up and tries to crawl. He can sit up assisted in a bumbo and has fantastic head control otherwise. We have a fun mat with mirrors, textures and sounds, hates it. We received a ridiculously expensive velour one from Bloomingdales (apparently Kim K has one) and it has been turned into a the worlds most expensive spit up cloth. So he gets like 5 mins a day. I hope it gets better.

You are cracking me up! If I don't get my boob/bottle out fast enough it sounds like we are sticking pins in him..love the world's most expensive spit up cloth! lol Liam only lasted about 5 minutes at first as well...I'm sure it will get better!

My LO is 10 weeks, and she is starting to love her activity mat when she's lying on her back. She's suddenly gained interest in the mobile and whacks at the hanging toys. She tolerates tummy time for short amounts of time. She mostly tries to eat the plush blanket. It is pretty cute.
Yes, I have seen him start to be interested this last day or so laying on his back and looking at the objects, especially the little mirror. I know it will get better!
My son is just now three weeks old and I'm waiting for his cord to fall out before I start my tummy time. He's already trying to roll over and he's very strong. I can't wait till he can have his tummy time. I think he'll love it
I don't do tummy time. She lays on my chest and works those same muscles a ton when I wear her. She has wicked good head control at 6.5w.
Yeah, I do a lot of time with her on my chest, but I wear her most of the day, and she's now easily able to hold up her head and look around on walks, etc. at 9 weeks. She CAN do it on her play mat, but she's not such a fan. Generally, she'll hang out for a bit, and then pick her head up and scream, so.
She has almost constantly been on my chest since day one, so I guess she does most of her tummy time on me. She has really good neck control, and can sit up if we help her balance with her arms. When we try putting her on her tummy on her playmat, she is okay with it for about two minutes and then gets really cranky. She seems to do a lot better moving her head around everywhere else, playmat, not so much. I think it is a little too slippery for her.
