Babies: 6 - 9 Months

need advice about teething

DS's top teeth are both coming down and he is beginning to refuse the breast and I'm worried about him not getting enough to eat each day. For the most part he's been feeding some even if only for a few minutes on each breast but today he has been completely refusing to take it. I've pumped and given it to him in a sippy cup, but would like to avoid exclusively pumping if at all possible.

I've been pumping some the last few days so that my supply doesn't drop, but I'm also worried about him weaning too early. I've read in some of my baby books about babies weaning as early as 10 months but he's not even 9 months yet.

Any advice is appreciated.

Re: need advice about teething

  • Are you ok with giving Tylenol/Motrin for his teething pain? Maybe give it a couple of hours before bed so you can get one or two good feedings in once it kicks in. I'd say baby Orajel or a frozen washcloth, but those might make it hard to nurse. And maybe try feeding him a dark, quiet room just to avoid any potential distractions?

DD loves her sippy cup when her teeth are bothering her because she can gnaw on the spout while she's drinking, so he may need that for a day or two if it makes it less painful. I've read that sometimes the act of nursing can hurt babies when they're teething, depending on which teeth are coming in, so maybe just go with it for now. I'm with you, though, I go nuts when DD is being fussy and won't eat. I always get so worried she's not getting what she needs when that happens.

  • I'm guessing it's a teething issue and should pass in a few days. I think you are doing the right thing to keep offering the breast and to pump to keep your supply up.  Remember they are getting what they need as long as they have a good amount of wet and dirty diapers.

If it is still going on after 2-3 days I guess I'd ask the pedi...
