Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Starting Cereal

We went for our 4 mth checkup and doc told us to start cereal out of a bowl. He said it's a learning experience eating off a spoon, but is it normal for LO to gag. I will give him just a little bitty bit and he still gags. I can also have it so runny it could go in a bottle and still he gags. What's your input?

Re: Starting Cereal

  • It's not something we'll do. We started DS1 on solids at 6 months, skipping cereal. We'll do the same for DS2, maybe slightly earlier, like 5.5 months if he's ready.

  • Cereal isnt necessary, its empty calories. however, if your child has any reflux i can understand why you would want to use cereal.
  • I think it's a new texture and its something they learn I think a little gagging is normal..

  • Contrary to what you would think, a liquid is harder to eat off of a spoon. For adult patients that gag, nurses thicken all of their liquids. That being said, I'd just try again in a week or two. James didn't do well with his first cereal feeding. We waited two weeks and he's now eating cereal like a champ and he adores it! He started really watching us at meal times. Once he did that, he ate well.
